  • [-]We're considering moving to LA-area from NYC, but won't be able to make the decision for a few months. Have a dc whom I'm applying to K this year. (Still going through NYC process because it's about 50/50 that we'll go.) Anyone have any insight into Cali-private school process? Will we be screwed at that late date? If so, any neighborhoods better than others in/around LA for public elementary schools? I'll speak with my psd too, of course, and do some research online, but thought a few here might have BTDT.

    • I thought some moms posted before and the process there is nowhere close to NYc process. If they have openings, and you can pay, your dc is in. I assume, if no major issues.

      • My sister lives in LA and she thinks it is actually harder than here. She said there really are "feeder" preschools and it can be really hard if you don't have connections. OP, I think you need to full on do the application process for LA as well.

        • I really really doubt this. There were moms in my group who moved to LA and heard it was not all that hard.

    • OP - thanks all. Hmm, no clear consensus. I guess I'll check in with PSD asap and find out. Wasn't going to bother her until we knew a bit more. Thanks also for that info on the schools. Yes, Bev Hills definitely has a good rep, but we weren't sure we wanted to live there. :) But may have to - at least to start out - if private isn't an option. Thanks again!

      • You should check our the schools in Pacific Palisades and Brentwood. The Canyon School, Marquez Schoo, Kenter Canyon School, are all great elementary schools. There are also good elementary schools in Santa Monica. The Lincoln middle school in Santa Monica is very good, as is the high school ,which has an honors program. The middle school in the Palisades and Brentwood is very large (Paul Revere) and not everyone has a high opinion of it. If you want to stay near the beach, the Malibu school system is very good from K - high school, but not very diverse. As for private schools, there are fewer, and they are very competitive, especially the well-known ones like Crossroads and Harvard Westlake. That being said, we were considering movi...

        • Op-thank you! This is so helpful. We're considering Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Santa Monica, so this is great info to have. Most of my friends who grew up there went to private, but I figured there HAD to be a strong public school system given some of the communities out there. Even if we started in public until we had a chance to apply to private after K. Thank you, thank you!

    • Wow, how many of you replying to this post actually live in LA? I do, my child goes to a fancy private school, and she only went to daycare, not a "feeder" pre-school. There's a book that lists all the private schools in the LA area, called the Whitney Guide (you can get it on Amazon, I think) that's very helpful for addresses, etc. It also lists schools by philosophy,(progressive, traditional, Waldorf) which is great. Her opinions are a little wild though, since it seems she's only visited each school once, some years and years ago. Still, very useful if you're new to the territory. The Windward School is indeed a wonderful school, but it's 7-12. Brentwood is a very traditional school that goes k-12. There are no single sex schools ...

      • OP - Thank you! I started doing some research online today, and yes, it looks like for K, the Oct cut-off is pretty standard. So I might end up applying to both LA and NYC schools and see what happens. It sounds like there are a few public options too, so it's nice to have that back-up. Thanks for your help - I'll get the book this week. Really, really appreciate it!

            • Los Angeles Unified School District encompasses the whole county of L.A. So there is a chance that school children will be bused. This is not an issue in Orange County. Each city has it's own school district so it would be highly unlikely that poor children would be bused out of district.

              • You're absolutely wrong about that. LAUSD doesn NOT encompass the whole county of LA, just most of it. There are many cities in LA county that do not belong to LAUSD. There is Santa Monica and Malibu, which have their own school districts. Beverly Hills has their own school district also, which is excellent. Culver City has their own and so does Burbank. If you go up beyond the valley there's Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, Calabasas (another excellent school district), and many other towns that are part of LA county but not LAUSD. Hope that helps. But it's correct that you don't want to send your kid to LAUSD. You may as well send them to school in Tijuana since more than 80% of the kids are Hispanic.

              • I don't live in East Los Angeles, Watts, or any of the border towns so the illegal alien problem doesn't bother me. I also don't collect welfare or state funded program money so the deficit doesn't concern me. Sure, my taxes are a little high (que sera, sera)...but so are taxes in NY...I wouldn't trade living in SoCal for anything. You can't argue the awesome weather & the layed back people. You NYers should try not to have such big sticks up your asses so much & relax like we do. :-)

              • I can know all about California's immigration issues - as well as all the state's issues that have nothing to do with immigration, such as ineffectual governance and inane public and fiscal policy - without resorting to reducing an entire group of HUMAN BEINGS to the dehumanizing term "illegals" and without implying that *all* schools in the entire state of California (with and without illegal immigrants) are somehow horrible/unfit bc some do have illegal immigrants as students.

                • "Illegal" is a term for people who are here illegally, Stupid. If the shoe fits.... There's nothing you can say to make it untrue, when Latinos come here illegally then they are considered "Illegal Aliens" - get it? And the fact is that the schools with the higher number of children who are illegal or are only legal because their mothers were crowning as they crossed the border, are the schools that perform the worst. It's a fact! Look it up.
