[-]Anyone who used a Doula with a traditional OB? I dont love love my OB -he's "fine"...but maybe a doula would be a nice add on...looking for recommendations or thoughts. I am 5 months pregnant.
5 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I used one. Had high hopes for a natural childbirth. Was a little disappointed in my doula b/c didn't recognize clear signs of "back labor." Was excruciating, wasn't progressing. I finally agreed to an epidural, and I felt like she wasn't really "getting" what was going on. Wanted me to try stuff to move baby when all medical personal said dd was past the point of repositioning. So... I'd probably do it again, but in hindsight, she wasn't that helpful. Nice back massages, though!
[ Reply | Options ]Well, I had a midwife, but I know my doula does hospital births too. She really finds out what you want rather than pushing her own agenda. She's big on education before the fact so you know what you're options really are. Her name is Rina Crane at doularama.com If you can't get her through there, you can pm me.
[ Reply | Options ]unless you're going to attempt the herculine task of going natural, i personally think it is a waste of money.
[ Reply | Options ]Agreed. I had one because I wanted to do natural. The birth did not go that way and she ended up being kind of useless. The information she shared prior to the birth was really helpful, but you can probably get that from a birthing class. It was sort of nice to have someone at the hospital to tell you what's going on and help with initial nursing.

[-]I had a miscarriage three years ago, then DD a year later. Now I am 7 wks pregnant again, and simply cannot believe that the pregnancy is OK, partly because, though I have other symptoms, so far I have no morning sickness. Really: I have a feeling of dread. I'm going to get an ultrasound Friday, that will be a relief, but seriously -- what can I do to get through this, those who btdt? Or do I just have to wait? TIA.
3 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Honestly, every pregnancy can be different. My record is 1 mc, 1 ds, 1 mc, and now 12 wks along. With my ds, had barely any morning sickness, and with one of my mc's I had morning sickness even AFTER the fetus had likely ceased to be viable. (Took my hormones a while to go down.)

[-]Are there any warm, caring, experienced OB/GYNs in Manhattan? This is my first pregnancy and I'm extremely anxious. Grateful for any recommendations.

I loved, loved, loved DeMarco at Columbia. We had some complications and she was wonderful. I actually missed seeing her after we had our dd
[ Reply | Options ]I like Amy Huang a lot. Very warm and competent. She takes United (they are the same as Oxford now, right?).
[ Reply | Options ]I know that you said OB/GYN but you may want to consider a midwife, I had an OB for #1 and I have a midwife for #2 and I have to say that the level of care is completely different with a midwife, she spends much more time with me and I never feel rushed. I chose an OB for the first because I was over 36 and thought it may be riskier.

you are trying way too hard. Will post again that odd names equal less success for kids. It's a curse to stick them with something nobody can pronouce or spell.
[ Reply | Options ]why are you trying so hard. What is wrong with a normal name. sheesh. so effing pretentious.

i know etienne is french for steven but it sounds so femme to me and no nn possibilities. also it just sort of reminds me of francois on rhonyc. trying way too hard.

was just reading the research that says kids with strange names (odd spellings or hard to pronouce names) are much less successful in life. I wouldn't make things more difficult for a kid by harnassing them with a weird name, but that's your choice.
[ Reply | Options ]It kind of reminds me of the word sybarite. Maybe not a word that you want to have associated with your child :(

[-]At what stage of your pregnancy did you start showing? I have friends say they didn't show until 6 months - but I am 17 weeks and have already "popped". Is this not normal?

[-]If I am trying to keep total weight gain to 25-30, where should I be at 20 weeks? "Halfway there" (12.5-15 pounds) or does it not work like that - do you gain that much more in end of 2nd Tri and 3rd tri? Thanks.

[-]New York Moms: I'm 26 weeks preggo and need to sign up for a birth class. I'm delivering at NYU Tisch. Is it good to take the birth class at the hospital where you are delivering? I've also heard that the "Real Birth" classes are good. My OBGYN is Spring and they also offer a class. Anyone have experience/recommendations? TIA.
1 reply [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Took the Real Birth classes and delivered @ NYU. Found the newborn care classes very helpful and pragmatic. The birthing classes were also informative in an empirical sense but in my experience with my 3 DCs, childbirth rarely follows the nicely laid out steps that they teach you in class. Handy information to have but don't expect to follow a highly structured birthing plan.

[-]I am trying to help my professional nanny find a new position(in Manhattan). She has been with us for over three years, since my son was eight weeks old. However, I no longer need her full time. Ideally she would like to begin in early 2010, but is flexible on a start date. Please feel free to contact me at b.goldbetter@gmail.com if you'd like to discuss further.

[-]Trying to decide whether to deliver 2nd baby at SLR birthing center or reg labor and delivery. Had my first naturally at SLR labor and delivery. A little freaked about going home in 12 hours ... Can anyone share experience? Thx
2 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I was planning on having my 4th at the birthing center but it was full when I went into labor--so was SLR's L&D but that's a whole other story... at the birthing center they let you stay for 18 hours, and I ended up leaving about 16 hours after I gave birth. I knew I'd be more comfortable at home. If you have an easy/natural delivery it shouldn't be a problem. I was a little tired/sore walking from the taxi to my apt but it wasn't terrible and I much preferred being in my own bed & bathroom! The main thing imo though is you want to stay so your baby can have the PKU test 12-24 hours after birth and you don't have to return for it.

How can I tell the difference between a braxton-hicks contraction and a real contraction. I am 39 weeks, have been feeling sharp quick pains every 20 minutes but they are not that long, maybe 10-15 seconds. It's only been an hour since this started so I know I have to wait it out. Just wondering....
