[-]We're expecting twins, and are very excited! We're interviewing baby nurses, and have spoken to two in particular who seem really wonderful. What's the going daily rate in Manhattan for a live-in baby nurse taking care of two? We will probably hire her for two months.
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I had an agency quote me 225 for a twins 24 hour baby nurse, and another baby nurse quote me $300 for twins. Of course, you can always go higher...
[ Reply | Options ]225 from an agency. Wow, the times, they are a changin'. When I was looking 2 years ago, the agencies were quoting 250-275 for one baby but you could find one directly for 225-250
[ Reply | Options ]We are probably looking at somewhere between 250-350 per day, from baby nurses who are unaffiliated with agencies. We haven't heard anything outrageously expensive, and nothing bargain basement either. We will need a nanny once the baby nurse leaves, but we're on the fence about whether to get someone just for during the day, or for 24 hour care. We're a two-career household. Thoughts?

[-]I am 8 and a half weeks thanks to IVF. Now my new thing to worry about is the nuchal screening in 2 weeks. I am 38 and terrified. I was under the impression that they "hand pick' the best looking embryos to implant and the chances of Downs. etc. are diminished. We didn't do PGD and now I regret it. I am learning that IVF doesn't make any difference since they can't tell by looking at it- Great.
3 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I did IVF in Dec. Had 25 viable embryos and they transferred one back, "the best of the best". It took...and then I terminated in March due to a Downs diagnosis. I was in utter shock! How could the best of the best have Downs? Well...something must have made it stand out. Transferred two frozen embryos in July and am now 23-weeks pregnant with a little boy.
[ Reply | Options ]It's true, without PGD there is no better or worse chance but just enjoy this time, right now. I was a five time IVFer and I worried my entire pregnancy. If I could do it all again, I wish I had enjoyed it more and worried less. BTW, I was 37 when it finally worked for us. So, congrats and enjoy being preggers mommy!!!!

[-]I'm so scared of my CVS next week - I don't know if I'm more scared of the procedure, the results, or trying to keep my toddler away from my ab area and not being able to pick him up for 2 days....
1 reply [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I'm having mine on Monday and I'm terrified too. More of the results than the procedure itself (my husband and I are both carriers for the SMA gene so there's a 25% chance the baby will have it.) I think the waiting will be agony. Can someone look after your little one for you the day of the procedure? Do you have a partner who can distract him/her at night? I'm sure it's harder than it sounds - good luck to you! Where are you having your test done?

[-]4 y/o dd is very, very keyed in to db #2 being another girl. Any advice on whether or not to bring her along to the ultrasound? She wants to come, but if db is a boy, would it be better to break the news to her in a different setting?
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]DO NOT DO THIS. Suppose there is some problem/concern. Even if minor, do you really want to deal with your 4 yo while you're sorting through your own emotions? (We had a small finding that in the end was meaningless, but I was a nervous wreck while they were telling me about it.)
[ Reply | Options ]Really, for all the stated reasons, don'd do it. If its a boy, she may be genuinely upset and you don't want to take away from your own happiness right then. If it is a boy, maybe you and DH can go and get her a boy baby doll and tell her that way?

[-]thinking of naming dd after a dear friend...but she said she hates her name. so is it a bad idea?
3 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]and you really need to ask this--friend HATES her own name and you want to name DC in honor of that person...its questions like this that make me question the right that each person should get one vote...my vote would be offset by this one knucklehead who cannot think on their own..why should I research the voting issues if my vote will be diluted so easily

[-]Name poll: Judah. I'm due next week and this is the name we've been planning. However, now I'm afraid the New Testament negative connotations (i.e. Greek form of the name, Judas) will plague him his entire life. Help!
24 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]only if you're a jew imo. otherwise too close to judas. i know a couple. both jews.
[ Reply | Options ]If your not at all religious then I would use it and if you are then I would use something else. I also must say that just b/c Judas betrayed Jesus it does not mean the name is cursed or anything so I wouldn't see a problem with using it as long as this detail doesn't bother you. I personally, don't like it but to each his own.

OP: Thanks for the feedback. DH is very much against changing the name at this point, and I do love the name. I wonder if the negative connotations could be overcome. Kind of like when you first meet an Oscar and all you think of is "the Grouch" but then Oscar becomes his own person and you no longer think of the grouch...

If anyone(in Manhattan) will need a full time nanny, to begin early 2010, please let me know. I am trying to help my nanny find a new full time position. She's been with me for three years, but we don't need her FT anymore. You can reach me at b.goldbetter@gmail.com and I will be happy to discuss with you.

It's a russian name. It means lion. Tolstoy's first name in Russian is Lev. I love it, but wouldn't give it to a child in the US b/c I think it's too weird/people will mispronounce/misspell constantly.
[ Reply | Options ]-
it's 3 letters and is pronounced as it's spelled. believe it or not we americans are not that stupid.
[ Reply | Options ]um, defensive, much? NYCers will probably get it right. But my kid may (gasp, horror) some day live elsewhere. I still think it's weird. And, you think you pronounce it the way it's spelled, but in fact to a native russian speaker's ear, you're mispronouncing it.
[ Reply | Options ]-
I'm not the OP - I don't want encouragement and I have already dismissed this name (altho I love it) b/c my american DH doesn't quite get the pronunciation right despite hours of coaching. Of course my kid may end up living somewhere else. But somewhere else half way across the world is less likely than, say, another city in the US.

[-]Moms of holiday babies: Do you a) Send a birth announcement PLUS a holiday card or b) Let the holiday card double as the birth announcement? To further complicate things, this is DS #2.
1 reply [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I'm due on December 24th. I've decided to send holiday cards out in early December, and then will do a baby announcement after the birth. Even though we've already picked out the announcement, with printing time there is no way it will be sent before the baby is 2 weeks old, which will definitely put us in the new year. I say send both if you have the time and inclination.

[-]I just started work for a large consulting firm in NYC and recently discovered that I'm pregnant. Because DB is due 9 months after starting I'm not covered by FMLA (requires you to have worked for 12 months) for the 12 weeks paid leave. Can I negotiate for this, and if so, what is the best way? When should I tell my boss/HR? Please help!
8 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Tell after the first tri, just like any other pregnancy. Can't speak to the benefits part, but they may offer something better than the legal requirement.
[ Reply | Options ]-
Look in your employee handbook, or on the HR website to see company policy (different and often more generous than FMLA). From there, once you're ready to let your boss know, you can start working out the details. If you are adding value, they'll want to make you happy.
[ Reply | Options ]My company offers 12 weeks paid leave, but only after 12 months work; that is why I'm so stressed. The earlier I tell them, the less time I have to prove that I'm adding value. If I wait until later, they may be angry and not give me the paid leave even though they value me. I was planning to tell around 6 months. Thank you all for the advice!
