Beauty moms, is there really any difference between using a $20 cream as opposed to a $500 one? Say, between Neutrogena and La Mer.

    • I'm more concerned with using products that contain carcinogens. Stay away from parabens and petroleum. Some simple shea butter or organic body oil works wonders and is a fraction of La Mer.

      • I've heard this. So petroleum is bad? No Aquaphor? What are the bad ingredients in sunscreen again? Avobenzone and Titanium Dioxide?

    • IME, the only things that actually make a difference in my skin are retinols, Vitamin C, and AHAs. The rest is irrelevant. Get yourself a good retinol serum or cream and use it as often as your skin will tolerate it. Don't spend a lot on anything else.

        • pp: pure retin A, i bought it from a Mexican website, prescription free and very cheap. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Serum and Mario Badescu C serum. I stopped the La Roche serum when it finished and can see my skin already getting rough with more pronounced pores like before. If you read on the beauty forums there is a lot of DIY info.

        • OR: I use a retinol cream by Avene called Retrinol. It's available in .05 and .1 concentrations (I use the .1 and have had no issues). I also love the SkinCeuticals line. Excellent products with high levels of active ingredients.

    • No. There are certain ingredients that you should look for and others you should avoid, but you can find great creams for way less than $20 and flush your money down the toilet on pricey ones.

    • just as if not more important is what you put in your body - stay hydrated and avoid processed food.
