Do you 'enjoy' spending time with your kids?
- Yes, most of the time we really have fun together
- Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's really dull and aggravating
- Honestly most of the time it's not fun at all, but it's not supposed to be fun
- I really don't enjoy it at all, and wish I could spend less time with them

PSD just asked us what our plans are if we get shutout. SHUTOUT? isn't this what I just paid you almost $60K over the last 3 years to prevent from happening?
73 replies [ Reply | Watch | MoreI understand your concern but you can't assume that any preschool can guarantee access to the schools you chose. That may be more a function of the type and number of schools you applied to. Plus it's still important to have some sort of plan if all else fails.
[ Reply | More ]ERB scores and birth month? Is the list top heavy and are you trying for co-ed schools?

these are by far safeties. Your local public is as safe as you can get in this procedure

Applying next year so I have no skin in this game. Butis it true that with 82 ERBs CSH and MM should be considered safeties?
[ Reply | More ]MM and CSH are not safety schools. That's why your PSD is asking you this. Why didn't you apply broadly?
[ Reply | More ]MM is not any more a safety school than CSH. To those of you applying next year be sure to understand this. The only caveat is if you are a Billionaire, offer a very special kind of diversity and or have a board level connection. This, by the way, is the reality for all seven girls school, all seven. The rules are different if you fit in one of these categories no matter which school you are considering.

And this is why expensive preschool is a racket. There are no assurances and you really should not have assumed that because you paid $60k your kid would get into a very selective and competitive school. I sincerely hope you are not shut out. But there are a very limited number of spots and lots and lots of applicants.

this is a very good point. Connected preschools certainly can place a number of kids in the top schools, but it's going to be sibling and legacy first. So if you are none of the above you'll get less help from the PSD than you would in a less connected preschool where a lot of parents want public and the PSD can focus on a much smaller number of children to place. At least this is our opinion.

I'm a public school mom, but I agree with OP. These preschools justify their ridiculous pricetag with the (unmentioned) understanding that PSD will help with exmissions. In fact, even if the OP is a PITA, who cares? It's about the kid. If the kid (or family, I guess) is going to have trouble being admitted somewhere, the PSD should have talked to OP a year ago, or at least during the application time. It's nonsense to ask this question now.
[ Reply | More ]I know a mom at dc preschool, who applied to 15 schools and was shutout and to make matters worst she has has a dd at a private and they didn't accept the sibling

Enjoy the next 12 years, and see what your top notch school tells you at college prep time. Friends' family member went to a ss tt school. Got "shut out" of all colleges she applied to, why? B/c she didn't do safety at all. Wahhhh.
[ Reply | More ]Not that I necessarily disagree, but "a friend's family member" is hardly statistical proof of your theory.
[ Reply | More ]I've never heard of anyone getting shut out from college from a TT school. They are pretty direct about where the kids should apply. Did she end up somewhere?
[ Reply | More ]np: i agree, although there are kids who fall through the cracks. i went to a tt boarding shcool and i had a friend who was: top 10% of the class with 1550 SATs (out of 1600 back then!) and captain of 2 varsity sports teams (one of which was a more unique sport for women), plus a bunch of other extras. she was counseled to apply to 2 ivies and 2 strong 2nd tier schools. she's someone who likes to have fall backs and applied to 2 safeties in addition to what they'd recommended. well, she ended up ONLY getting into those safeties - not even WL at the other 4. her college counselor really had no explanation for her. I think that she looked like such a strong applicant that they didn't think they'd have to work for her. who knows? and this was in an era when my school was getting 20% of the graduating class into HYP and another 20% into the rest of the ives plus Stanford, MIT, etc.
