we just returned from vacation and came home to a slightly ajar door. dont know who came in, how or for how long the door was open. doormen downstairs have the key as does our landlord. now need to change the locks. does anyone have the schlage locks that can be opened remotely so you can let babysitters/cleaners in? any recommendations for this type of lock? any feedback would be great. i'm so upset here and want it changed asap! thanks!

      • I'd change the locks and keep "forgetting" to give new key to super. Bldg mngr of my coop doesn't have key. And fwiw, head handyman was fired for getting caught hanging out in some unwitting owner's apt watching tv on the couch all day.

        • The Super needs a key. in case there is a fire, or leak, and you woud want him in there. But they are required to gibe you notice of they plan to enter the unit. You shoudl find out, stealthily, who was in there.

    • That must have been so scary. was anything stolen? We once came home from vacation and discovered a squirrel had gotten in our house and couldn't get out. It was gross.

      • We went to our place in the country a few months ago, and found the back door wide open. Nothing missing. Positive we locked it. Glad it was before the heavy snow, or we'd have had serious water damage.

    • Have you spoken to the doormen yet?

      • Never had a fire in my apt and the few times I have had emergencies they actually took a very long time to come up so I still say don't give them the key. The likelihood of a damaging problem is minimal.

        • Then don't complain if the firemen need to break your door down when your smoke alarm is going off.

    • If only the doorman and landlord have a key, why change the lock? Might you have left the door open by accident--shut it, but not quite enough to latch? Or was it a deadbolt?

      • CHANGE THE LOCK. No discussion. Keep the key. No discussion.

        • np She has a LANDLORD. It's likely a requirement of the lease that he/she have a key.

    • If anyone has a key there is always the possibility of an inside job. With long time employees there is sometimes a casual atmosphere and an opportunity for the wrong person to somehow have access to the keys. If they know you're on vacation watch out.

      • ITA. I'm glad I live in a non doorman building with one employee--the super. Would trust the guy with my life (and my keys).

      • I live in a coop and its a requirement of my bldg too. And? My apt, my rules. WHen I was renovating another apt in same bldg they routinely pranced in w/out permission, claiming they needed to check up on it. Really? I live one floor down and they still never asked or notified me. New apt: I kept "forgetting" and they stopped asking. If they need to break down the door for an emergency I'll gladly pay for a new door. That is extremely unlikely to happen. Meantime -- NO KEY.

    • Your building should get a key security system that automatically logs each time a key is taken out. There are biometric systems that know which staff member took out the key and when it was returned - this is a powerful deterrent against any foul play. Two systems I know of are KeyLink by BuildingLink and KeyTrak.
