  • Applying to a charter school that basically takes kids in by lottery. My 2nd option (public school) is not very attractive. The school has over 50% of kids from projects and I am worried about discipline. I was thinking of writing a first choice letter to the charter school, even though i realize it may be a useless exercise. What do you write in FC letter? Thanks for help.

    • if it's a lottery, you don't write a letter. btw, if you're worried about children's discipline just because of where they live maybe you don't belong in a charter school.

      • I do not understand why i do not belong in a charter school. Charter school is much more reflective of our status (middle class), whereas the public zoned school is half project kids. And yes, i am concerned about the discipline of kids from projects. I am probably not the only one to think that a lot of those kids are from troubled families.

      • OP is just being honest. Have you spent time in any public schools with a high % of very low income students? I have. They are not great learning environments. Not because the kids are not smart but because they often come from very difficult home situations and can be disruptive and aggressive.

    • Wait for the lottery. If you don't get picked, write a great letter and follow up with a call to a contact at the school. I understand that the charter schools have strictly run lotteries, but after that have a lot of choice in who they choose to fill the spots not taken by those chosen in the lottery.

          • I was asking for an advise on FC letter, not the school itself. 217 is very far from me, i work full time and will have 2 younger kids at home with a nanny come September. I cannot ask the nanny to go 40 minutes each way with a toddler and infant to pick up older one from school.

      • In that area there's East Midwood Hebrew Day School and Midwood Catholic Academy so you do have other options.

    • i don't understand people like you who don't plan for their dcs' education any better than this. a horrible gen ed or a slim chance at a lottery school? if you are mc, you can and SHOULD do better for your dc. unless your big apartment means more to you.

      • ^oh, and the idea that you think you can talk your way in with a fc letter to a charter school only confirms your cluelessness and your sense of entitlement.

    • if the charter school you apply to is in a neighborhood with housing projects, those children often receive extra tickets in order to create a school community that reflects the neighborhood. you may want to find out who this particular charter distributes tickets.
