When can you start scheduling bf'ing? I am going on 3 weeks and am hoping that by about a month this is possible? This on demand stuff is killing me- I want to be able to get out of the house some! Can't seem to pump much without messing up my supply for the baby for the rest of the day. HELP!

        • It is less about scheduling, and timing and more about following a pattern. Sleep, eat, awake time, sleep, instead of eat, sleep, eat, sleep, which is what you are doing right now. The thought behind it is also that they sleep for longer stretches this way.

    • On demand. Three weeks is too young. Supplement with formula/pumped milk to give yourself a break, your sanity matters, too.

    • Never. I guess at 3 months the baby can go about 4-5 hours without.. so that might work for you. Breastfeeding isn't scheduled.

        • NP: My 4 m/o DS is FF'd and he isn't "scheduled" either. Meaning, he usually goes about 3 hours between bottles, but sometimes can be OK for more than 4 hours and other times will be screaming hungry after 2.5 hours. We feed him when he's hungry - not by the clock.

          • np- I had my 1 mo ff on a schedule- of course if he was hungry he ate at an off time but babies really like a schedule, and with formula you have the ability to do that. Sleeping through the night at 7 weeks, by the way-

            • I think people's definition of "schedule" differs. To me, what you describe is maybe a "routine" but definitely not a "schedule".

        • breastfeeding on a schedule doesn't make any sense to me. you nurse so that the babby can get a lot more benefit than the milk. In hindsight, my kids are the way they are from laying next to me, and knowing they were safe, and never crying for their first year. I guess I'mwrong. You could nurse them "on a schedule", but then you are losing out on all of the other bonds nursinng offers. My second hopped on and off every 45 mins. And if you took her to the playground today, at 2, you would think she was a total joy. And she would go with you, too.

        • usually after about 6-8 weeks the child sets on a pattern which happens to be around 3hrs; but there are always growth spurts, etc. to set that off.

    • its less that you schedule it than that teh baby does. certainly at about 10 weeks both my babies fell into pretty reliable aptterns, with about 3 hours between feedings. 3 weeks is too early to schedule but you can go out of the house when ever you want, jsut bring the baby with you.

      • op- it's a little too cold for that! Plus I want to get out ON MY OWN, not with baby! I've had friends who go back to work at 6 weeks and EBF- I would assume they have to be scheduling?

        • no, they are pumping. the caregiver is feeding when the baby seems hungry. and if you want to get out on your own, pump and leave someone with a bottle. Also, FWIW, i had two winter babies and we went out together all the time. bjorn under the coat keeps everyone toasty warm.

        • what is ebf? Women pump at work. Every 3 hours. And that milk comes home for the babies bottles the next day. Bottles are scheduled. I've never heard of scheduling nursing, although I'm sure women do it today. Do you think mom goats schedule the nursing of their little ones? Sorry, the visual just popped in my head when I was trying to think why it was so odd.

          • I don't know about bottles being scheduled. I pumped, nanny fed DB on demand.

            • i guess you are right. too little to say.. wait it out. Although I do remember my pediatrician telling me to try to make my baby wait a bit longer between feedings. poor advice.

    • If you gonna stay home..dont schedule. Just feed every two hours or on demand. Why do women always want to organize life? It is the fault of our stupid, in a rush, society. Just feed when you are full and baby is hungry.

      • I just want to be able to do something planned, like grab a lunch with a friend. Baby doesn't eat every 2 hours- eats 8-9 times a day, cluster feeding during the day and longer stretches at night.

        • I recommend the glamourmom nursing top. It's very discreet and wear it under a cardigan. Nurse the baby through a lunch. You need to get out. And the sooner you are comfortable nursing at a restaurant, the happier you will be. People wont stare. Find a nice table. Gl.

          • ITTTA. Learn how to nurse in public. I fed DB everywhere and anywhere - restaurants, museums, airplanes, parks. I'd put a light blanket or shawl over my shoulder and no one saw anything, no one ever complained, most of the time people had no idea what I was doing.
