    • Watch birds in the Ramble. Watch them build the 2nd Ave. Subway. Take the Subway to Coney Island, or the Aquarium. Go to the Central Park Zoo. Go ice skating. Take a walk in Central Park and see how many statues you can find. Go on a scavenger hunt. Build a volcano out of baking soda and vinegar. Go down to Battery Park and look out at NJ. Take the ferry to IKEA, play in the ball pit, eat meatballs. Pick a 10 block radius - see how many water towers and standpipes you can spot (extra points for finding a siamese connection!). Have pancakes at the Vinegar Factory. Bake some cookies. Build a fort in your living room using chairs and old beach towels. How many more do you want?

      • All great ideas. A few more -- take the Roosevelt Island tram over to RI, walk up to the light house and back; Walk over any of the bridges with pedestrian paths (Brooklyn Bridge is the classic -- you can also walk over to Randall's Island); Staten Island Ferry, then a walk through Battery Park playgrounds, then see the Irish Hunger memorial;play simple card games -- War is a good one; anything with any kind of cooking.

    • I would also add a trip to the Cloisters (a knight's castle), a trip to the Toy Museum (FAO Schwartz), a visit to any pet store, Museum of NY (has a great firetruck in the basement), carousel in Central Park, visit the little red lighthouse, take the Staten Island Ferry.

      • Bird watching mom again. Those are great ideas, too! We often take picnic onto Staten Island Ferry. Governors Island is fun, too, when there is a festival or something. Recent Archeological "Dig" was amazing! Re: Card Games - Milles Bornes is a big hit. NYC Fire Museum downtown also really fun, but WATCH OUT for their dangerous radiators, which are uncovered and piping hot (strange, considering their knowledge of things burning...). We've also done "Jewel Day" - read up on gemstones from library books, went to the almost-always-empty jewel section at AMNH, then perused the big rocks at Tiffany's. The giant diamond in the wall is great for boys, girls, and wistful mommies!

        • Haha I love (but clearly don't) that the fire museum has really hot radiators. someone should say something to them!

    • Bronx Botanical Garden train thing they have at xmas. Science museum in Queens is great. Subway museum downtown Manhattan. All sorts of "off off Broadway" children't theater (see NY Post on Sat., NY Times on Friday, Time Out for Kids). Lots of guided hikes in various NYC parks with Park Rangers. Ice Skating at Wollman Rink and other Rink at northern end of Central Park. Fishing at northern end of Central Park in warmer weather. Deep sea fishing near Sandy Hook NJ. Ferry to Statue of Libery. Ferry to Staten Island and children's museum there. Walk across Brooklyn Bridge. Should I continue?

    • Baking. Cooking. Lots of great kids and family programs at 92 Street Y. Jazz at Lincoln Center programs, special programs for kids. Ferris Wheel at ToysrUs near Times Square. Bronx Zoo. Biking along Hudson path. (You can rent tandems if your child doesn't ride two wheeler.) Barnes and Noble when they have kids reading programs by the authors. Go to the library.

    • We just saw Peter and the Wolf at the New Victory Theater. Tickets are only $12.50-$35 and they have programs for children. Intermission snacks were only $1 and they had a preshow activity for kids.

    • Grand Central to 1) watch folks run for trains (and sometimes miss them, kids think this is very funny), 2) buy a treat in the Market 3) look at the constellations; 4) find the whispering corner; 5) window shop in bad weather. they have holiday lights and model trains too.
