UPDATE: HELP gas post: Thank you to everybody who helped. It is not the gas line, it's the sewer line. A couple days ago a guy snaked my drain b/c in was leaking and it must have broke the pipe under my living room floor. The carpet is getting wet right there. It took a few days for the smell and wetness to get through the concrete that is underneath the carpet. Now I have to find somewhere to stay while they rip up the carpet, break through the concrete, find and repair the pipe, pour new concrete, and clean the carpets. Fun, huh. At least it's not gas!

      • Affinia hotels has a nice, reasonable long-term hotel/apt. on E 64th if that's anywhere near you.

    • oh boy. you might want to get some short term storage space and put clothing and linens into it. is your landlord going to pay for the repairs and for your relocation? do you have dc? how much of a disaster is this going to be for you?

    • You'll need NEW carpets--not good enough to clean them, imo.

        • Yeah but the landlord here is a cheapskate. It's not enough that he owns 2 complexes, each with 100 units for rent and makes a lot of $$ but said all they will do is clean them. I hate renting.

          • i'd think it's going to cost him just as much to clean them and reinstall them as it will to buy new.

          • They're soaked in SEWAGE. And other poster is right; it will cost as much to pull them out and clean them and reinstall (with new underlay--no way they can clean that) as it would to get cheap new carpeting.

        • No homeowners insurance? Otherwise sue landlord because he sure does. BTDT and just had this conversation w/insurance broker today. You need new floors, carpets, etc. Mold is extremely dangerous, especially for dc.

    • Why would there be sewer pipes running thru your living room floor? Is downstairs bathroom right beneath your L/R or are you on the ground floor? This really doesn't make sense to me.
