    • People upset by a)term limits change and b)his campaign spending perceived as buying the election. (FWIW, this is less my personal opinion than from what I have gleaned talking to friends/reading the news.)

      • alot of speculation on this however most voters really didnt care about the term limits issue. Thompson had nothing to run on so he just kept harping on this but most voters stated it was a non issue.

          • 9iu11ani won because he was white and he wasn't David Dinkins. He was re-elected because he still wasn't Dinkins and a lot of people thought he made them safe. Then, I think, post 9-11 Bloomberg seemed a safer bet. Closer to the existing/status quo. He has kept his job because he does it pretty well and the Democrats can't seem to find anyone to run for mayor with more qualifications than, I wasn't caught with hookers. It is embarrassing to be a Dem in NY these days.

    • The city has become a much less interesting place over the past 8 years. A morass of unaffordable luxury condos with entire neighborhoods replaced by ATMs, chain stores and Duane Reades. Manufacturing, ethnic neighborhoods, diverse mom and pop ground level retail; all gone. Could this have sparked a backlash or is it just me who feels this is not the great city it used to be?

        • German Yorkville: gone. Czech neighborhood East 70s: gone. Irish enclaves: Hells Kitchen, Yorkville-gone. Little Italy and Jewish Lower East Side: gone, long ago. German Jewish and Irish enclave Morningside Heights: gone. All of these ethnic neighborhoods have been replaced with an inauthentic EPCOT version of New York. The ground level retail is all chain convenience stores, bank branches etc...

And public schools are not great everywhere, or accessible in all good districts. He spent 16 times as much as Thompson on the campaign. He should be embarrassed at his stats!

Plus, he kept bashing Thompson for his tenure as chancellor of the public schools, but it's not like the public school system is doing that great under his control. That said, I couldn't get excited about Thompson either.
