Wondering why Bloomberg won by such a narrow margin. Any thoughts?
68 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I think he's done a good job as mayor but the term limit issue is scary. I voted against Bloomberg as opposed to for anyone.

this is a very heavily Democratic town. the Dems could nominate a meatball hero and the Bronx, Brooklyn and half of Manhattan would vote for it

but then again, Bloomberg got 60% last time with equally democratic town. So something else is going on. I know people who got mad at him for the time limits thing, and also the way media was making it no contest people may not have bothered to vote.
[ Reply | Options ]not really...the previous 4 elections were won by giuliani, giuliani, bloomberg & bloomberg, with ever increasing margins...this was a protest against the term limits as well as being tired of the same guy spending his way to victory
[ Reply | Options ]9iu11ani won because he was white and he wasn't David Dinkins. He was re-elected because he still wasn't Dinkins and a lot of people thought he made them safe. Then, I think, post 9-11 Bloomberg seemed a safer bet. Closer to the existing/status quo. He has kept his job because he does it pretty well and the Democrats can't seem to find anyone to run for mayor with more qualifications than, I wasn't caught with hookers. It is embarrassing to be a Dem in NY these days.

The city has become a much less interesting place over the past 8 years. A morass of unaffordable luxury condos with entire neighborhoods replaced by ATMs, chain stores and Duane Reades. Manufacturing, ethnic neighborhoods, diverse mom and pop ground level retail; all gone. Could this have sparked a backlash or is it just me who feels this is not the great city it used to be?

German Yorkville: gone. Czech neighborhood East 70s: gone. Irish enclaves: Hells Kitchen, Yorkville-gone. Little Italy and Jewish Lower East Side: gone, long ago. German Jewish and Irish enclave Morningside Heights: gone. All of these ethnic neighborhoods have been replaced with an inauthentic EPCOT version of New York. The ground level retail is all chain convenience stores, bank branches etc...

Bloomberg has given away unfair advantages to developers and other rich friends. Why should working people and middle class people vote for him? And public schools are not great everywhere, or accessible in all good districts. He spent 16 times as much as Thompson on the campaign. He should be embarrassed at his stats!

Nonvoter here. I voted for Bloomberg the last time around, but this time I wasn't thrilled with the term limit issue and the insane amount of spending. Plus, he kept bashing Thompson for his tenure as chancellor of the public schools, but it's not like the public school system is doing that great under his control. That said, I couldn't get excited about Thompson either.
[ Reply | Options ]people expected he would have it in the bag and since there were no state or national elections, they didn't bother to vote

Why was the term limit thing such a big deal? It didn't guarantee him the office, just the right to run. He still had to be elected.
[ Reply | Options ]the term limits issue rally pissed some people off and motivated them to vote. many people who like Bloomberg assumed he would win. Bloomberg is a fine enough mayor even with his unsuccessful ideas: olympics, congestion tax, west side stadium and his Manhattan-centric tendencies.
