    • It's not so bad. Take painkillers.

    • My experience was that it was quite painful both during and after. Definitely take painkillers beforehand. Your doc should have given some instructions on that

    • Have had two. You lie down, a thin catheter is inserted. A dye is dispersed. The thin catheter is taken out. You go home. I took two tylenols beforehand. The pain was a very very sharp menstural cramp. I turned beet red. Some spotting immediately after and no pain followed.

      • The second one was much more painful than the first one, for whatever reason. But again, no pain afterwards.

    • I think the anticipation of this purportedly uncomfortable procedure was worse than the actual HSG. The only truly painful part is at the very end of the dye dispersion but it honestly lasts about 4 seconds. Like others, it feel like a very acute menstrual cramp. Felt fine afterwards and think you should manage well with a couple of Tylenol before (and after if you feel like it). Good luck!

    • It is over so quickly. I didn't take painkillers and it was no worse than a pap test.

        • I'm wondering if one usually has terrible monthly cramping, will there be cramping during the HSG. And if the inverse is true? Does anyone know?

          • Maybe it is most painful for women where they actually find blockage? Also, everyone has vastly different pain thresholds so what some people fine to be no big deal could be crippling to others

    • Breathe through it. It hurt a bit, but not terrible. Honestly, I had more pain during/ after my first iui than I did from the HSG

    • Don't want to scare you but mine was painful -- apparently my cervix is very high and strangely angled and they couldn't get the tube in at first. This part really hurt but supposedly it was unusual, the nurse said she's never seen it take so long. Once it was in, it was okay -- the dye feels like menstrual cramps when it goes through your tubes but it's manageable. I would advise taking a strong painkiller first. Like if you have anything left over from wisdom teeth or anything -- take it. Once the test was over I felt fine, though.
