Would it be a huge mistake to send our fall birthday ds (who is currently in an excellent tt preschool) to public K, and see how it goes? We're undecided about public vs private, and feel we should at least give public a try. Would it be a nightmare to apply out from public K to the privates for K? Because he's a fall birthday, he's too young to apply to privates this year.

      • BTDT. Keep him in preschool unless you're clear public is what you want. Trying to apply out in a fall when a child is adjusting to a new, probably quite diffeerent, and possibly at this point overcrowded public is no fun.

    • that's what we're doing, though depends on your public option, of course

    • it depends. if you really think that public may be th eway that you want to go, i'd say better to try it when you still have the option to apply for private K the following year. i also think it depends on your preschool. at ours, our PSD helps get "alumni" kids into private ongoing, even in later years (like 2nd or 3rd grade) so I imagine if you come back to her next fall and say "we made a huge mistake, we are unhappy with public school, can you help us" she would. but not all schools are like this and they may say, no we have 50 current kids to place and they take priority.

        • just keep in mind that no PSD wants a current family to "skip" the last year of PS for public K - at a minimum it's lost tuition. so you may want to pick your words carefully. after the fact, it's much easier to apologize and recognize that you should not have done it.

    • If you do it realize odds are you will stay at public. It was our plan, we liked our K teacher and dc was very happy so never applied to privates. Now a couple years later we regret not doing it. Not easy to adjust to a new school while being pulled out to go on playdates though. If you do it limit yourself to 4 schools you love, don't do 10 schools.
