DH eats sugar cereals for breakfast. Pops, Frosted Flakes. I'm not into this. But somehow now my 5 yo dd and my 2 yo ds are having Pops daily. Can I change this? Is this a losing battle? Are sugar cereals really that bad for you?

    • i mean, it's much better if they have nutritious and whole grain cereals for breakfast--they won't get hungry as fast, more fiber, etc. what about doing a very small bowl of the cereal accompanied by something healthier like toast with pb/banana?

        • ^'ll try that. Perhaps they'd go in for yogurt?! Or maybe I can move them in the direction of Frosted mini wheats?

    • Look at the ingredients of frosted flakes vs. Kashi or similar...you'll be surprised that they're not that different.

      • You are onto something here, I've compared Honey Nut Cheerio's (which passes muster in my book) to Pops and it's almost the same thing. But Kashi? Nothing is in Kashi!!

    • I'd alternate the sugary cereals with something like cheerios, but they're not awful as long as your dcs don't eat high sugar snacks the rest of the day

    • My brothers and I grew up on sugar cereals (among other things like spagettios, kraft mac and cheese, frozen burritos, tv dinners, etc) and we're all healthy, normal, contributing members of society. In fact, I think the diet taught us moderation/self-control. Some of our friends did end up with food issues and interestingly, they were the ones whose parents policed their diets.

      • I wasn't suggesting that they were on a path to delinquency because they eat sugar cereals, but there are healthier things to eat for breakfast than Pops.

    • the best advice i've ever heard re: cereal is to check the sugar grams per serving on the box. #1 priority should be to have 9 grams of sugar or less per serving. then worry about additives, artificial flavors/colors, or whether it's whole grain, etc.

    • My dh also eats sugary cereals but we just say that he's teh only one allwoed to eat those. We buy her raisin bran, cherrios, rice krispies, etc. and give here a choice of those. I don't eat cereal that much but occasionally have special K with berries and similar so she can also choose my cereals. It works for us and she never complains since she does have a choice.

        • Frosted flakes, cinnamon toast crunch, fruity pebbles, and a couple of chocolate ones. I don't think rice krispies has very much at all. I know raisin bran has some but I like her eating the bran.

    • Oddly I gave dd my captain crunch once and she has yet to ask for it again. She likes raisin bran and those new multi grain cheerios

    • we buy sweet cereal and healthier cereals and and my 5 yr old can mix a bit of the the sweet cereal in with the healthier cereals. plus, the rule is that he always has to have some fruit mixed in.

    • Have you tried "Reduced Sugar" Frosted Flakes? It's 1/3 less sugar. My kids cannot tell the difference. And you will feel a little better...
