    • To answer you're question accurately, we'll need a parent of children at both Hunter and Horace Mann.

      • There is definitely very intense academic competition in both places, especially as it comes close to college application time.

      • I'm sure that two independent parents verifying that each school is a pressure cooker will suffice.

      • Hunter high school has a reputation for hyper-competition and grade obsessiveness. A recent poster said that it's not uncommon for girls to have eating disorders as a result of the stressful atmosphere.

        • NP: I wouldn't take that info as gospel. Personally I've never heard of that. Not to say that that doesn't happen, but it also happens at every other HS in the country.

        • nnp: I think MS and HS girls all over the country have eating disorders for all sorts of reasons. While over-competetive school environment is not a good thing, I don;t think you can blame EDs on it either. There are many triggers for those prone to EDs.

          • actually, the girl who described the situation didn't attribute the disorders to hunter but, rather, to the pressure that the parents are putting on the girls. they have spent years prepping the girls for the hunter test. and once they are in, they expect nothing less than "perfect". the girl who told the story is not a part of this group, but she feels that it contributes to a less than satisfactory high school experience. and she spoke out against the idea that we were considering having my child take the test, saying that it just isn't what people expect because much of the "peer group" isn't actually there because they are necessarily "gifted". they are there because of years of aggressive parent prepping that continues once they get into the school.

            • np - I think there are more girls like your friend than there are of the kind of girls she describes. You know?

      • Same at Hunter HS. Everyone wants to go to Ivy and they realize it is not going to happen unless they are well ahead of most classmates.

        • What kind of grades do you need to get into Ivy from these schools?

          • Straight A's and almost perfect SAT. Problem is most have that. Yes, I am a Hunter parent. LOVE it! Very aware my dc probably won't go ivy as a caucasion boy from Hunter. It doesn't matter. He will do great, go to a great school and knows how to study, think, express himself. He will do will in life and is confidant and happy. Much more important than Ivy!

            • If you have all A's and SAT above 1500, is your dc's chance to get into Ivy is great, moderately possible, or still very difficult?

              • still very difficult. harvard gets more apps from double 800 valedictorians every year than they have room for.

            • Caucasian boys don't need degree from ivy to do well in life. They already have a leg up anyway.
