Sad commentary on the economy. I just posted on Craigs for a mother's/nanny's helper for $10/hour and I've gotten fabulous responses.

    • It's better when the economy is bad and you only get lousy responses for a decent wage for a nanny's helper.

      • That's my point. People way too qualified to be my second set of hands.

        • qualified for child care or laid off from a "better position"? those people aren't qualified - they're desperate

          • True. I've met "over-qualified" candidates who were were laid off (or in between jobs) but not necessarily over-qualified in terms of child care, aside from maybe having raised their own kids. I was in awe of one person who was a well spoken, phd scientist but my husband reminded me that didn't mean that she was qualified to care for a child.

    • just remember that you get what you pay for in most situations.

      • Its a supervised second set of hands -- never alone with the kids. I'm not too worried.

      • I don't understand what that means when you say you get what you pay for. So if you pay $20 an hour, you'll get better care? There are so many human factors involved in all this. Its not like you're buy a computer and you get more for what you pay for.

        • Or: I mean that people who are willing to accept a job for $10/hr and who probably travel in from an outer borough are usually desperate for employment and are usually the last to be hired for a good reason. And they will leave at the drop of a hat if they find a job for more $. The nannies who get paid more are the ones who can ask for it because they are the ones who people know are good, have excellent references and experience and will pay up for them. If it is for a Mother's helper or a H.S. student, fine (OP says this is the case) but not for a f/t'er. I pay my housekeeper $20./hr. I can't imagine paying a person responsible for my dc less.

          • np: right now, this is a misconception. i personally know 2 nannies with 20 years of experience and amazing references who cannot find FT work and they have been actively looking for months. They are both asking $15/hr, they are legal and english speaking. They are not unemployer because they the "last to be hired" but simply because their last jobs ended at a time when supply of childcare providers far exceeds demand. If they remain unemployed, they may well be willing to work for less than their normal rate because they need to pay their bills! Is that desperate? Maybe, but does not make them less qualified.

    • I'd like to know what kind of response you got. I'm currently paying $10 for my babysitter whom I met through friends. We love her but she is going back to school and we need to look for someone else. I know that the going rate is usually higher and wondering what kinds of people we'll get by posting on Craig's List.

      • np: I'd try sittercity. I've had good luck with them. I always look for the ones who have had a background check. Even if you don't pay to see it, I figure they wouldn't have volunteered theirs if they had something to hide.

      • She's asking for a nanny's helper, not a sitter.

      • I don't know what to think about CL. I'm sure there are flaky people on there but I also know someone who found a fabulous nanny on CL and she's been with them for 4 yrs and has helped raised both of their children. (I also know someone who met their future husband on CL, but that's another story)
