Please tell me your time-saving tips for getting dcs out of the house for school and getting you to work in the AM...single mom here, and one dc will be in K and an afterschool program this year, the other in FT preK. I have had a FT nanny until this year, so while things were a bit rushed, there was flexibility, especially about when I got home from work. No more nanny now...I also have been incredibly spoiled because she gave them supper before I got home; now I'll be doing that. Believe me, I am not privileged or entitled at ALL and I know how to take care of my dcs, I just need some help getting organized and into this new routine. Thanks!

    • This was us too (naturally it didn't make sense to keep nanny on when DCs were in school FT). Lay everything out the night before. DCs should pick out their clothes (and make sure this includes socks and underwear) every night before bed. Lunches should be packed at night. For breakfast, if you want to take it to go, peanut butter and banana on bread/toast isn't the fastest, but gives you a lot of bang.

      • how can you pack lunch the night before if you use things like mayo or tomato on sandwiches? my kids would never eat a soggy sandwich!

    • good for you for giving this some thought. i had to get three kids out of the house in the morning and it can be crazy. here are my tips. when you do the laundry over the weekend, fold dcs clothing so that there's a whole day's worth of clothing is put together. underwear, socks, shirt, pants, etc. fold the underwear and socks between the shirt and pants so you go and grab the shirt and pants and you have everything you need. choose the easiest thing you possibly can for breakfast. if dc will eat a slice of bread and cheese, you can prepare it the night before and just hand it to him/her in the am. or else do cereal - put the cereal and bowl/spoon on the table the night before so you just have to pour it and grab the milk in the morning. do not allow any tv in the morning. in the short run it's a time saver for you, in the long run it'll cause problems. get dcs dressed asap so you don't have to rush two preschoolers (it's not worth the hassle. trust me!) as for getting home, have appetizers of some sort ready so that you can just walk in the door and have something for them to eat. it doesn't have to be complicated but things like cheese wedges with crackers, a yogurt, etc. And make crock pot meals two or three times a week. it's ten minutes in the morning (or even the night before) and then dinner is ready to be served when you walk in. lastly, consider hiring a teenager or college student to help you out for two hours when you get home. it'll be great to have the extra set of hands and the cost is really minimal compared to the ft nanny. good luck!

      • ^^^in the mornings. i'd institute a no-tv rule in the morning. in the short run it's helpful. in the long run it causes more problems than it's worth, imo. get dcs dressed asap so you don't have to rush two preschoolers (it's not worth the hassle. trust me!) as for getting home, have appetizers of some sort ready so that you can just walk in the door and have something for them to eat. it doesn't have to be complicated but things like cheese wedges with crackers, a yogurt, etc. And make crock pot meals two or three times a week. it's ten minutes in the morning (or even the night before) and then dinner is ready to be served when you walk in. lastly, consider hiring a teenager or college student to help you out for two hours when you get home. it'll be great to have the extra set of hands and the cost is really minimal compared to the ft nanny. good luck!

    • OP: Thank you; this is all really helpful. I'm sure it will be fine (everybody seems to be able to manage it :) ) but I think it's going to be a bit of a mad transition for a bit.

    • Make a quiche or two over the weekend. Call it egg pie. Good protein source and easy to eat/travels well.

    • Make sure you establish routines. Plan the meals for the next week over the weekend and then you only have to shop once and you know what will be for dinner that night.
