‘The two worst presidents America has ever had are George W Bush and Barack Obama’ – this was a comment from my teenage nephew and I initially ignored it but when we discussed it, he pointed out how bad the US fiscal situation has become (he had quite a few statistics on the tip of his tongue that I will not bother to repeat here) and I am starting to agree. It seems that most people express their political leanings these days, not by stating what they believe in, but by criticizing the other side and the health care debate seems to have been a great example of that. Republican or democrat, the ramifications of putting the US into long term debt for generations are quite concerning and it would appear that neither party makes fiscal responsibility a priority and this really concerns me. Am I alone in this line of thinking?

While GWB certainly contributed to the meltdown, the president alone is not responsible for how the economy is working. Many factors are at work. And Barack Obama took office in the middle of this turmoil and has not even been in office for a year. Surely history tells us that usually it takes some distance to judge whether a president was truly good/bad. Calling our two most recent presidents the worst sounds like a teenage thought!
[ Reply | Options ]From OP: I agree that these issues can not the result of a single president and perhaps Obama should be given more time but I do believe this is a much bigger issue than politicians seem to acknowledge. And GWB's administration did a lot to the worsen the fiscal situation of the US government - this is something that is hard for anyone to deny. Perhaps we have to wait and see how Obama does in reigning in spending but the way the deficit projections are looking, I am not to hopeful.
