Anderson parents received a letter this week from the school that outlined changes to the curriculum. Included information that they were going to incorporate Singapore Math.

NP: It is in the letter from the Assist. Principal, under the heading "Curricular Review."
[ Reply | Options ]It was in the PTA letter: "A group of teachers and parents worked on a plan to un-spiral the Everyday Mathematics program....as well as integrating components of other math programs...(e.g. Singapore Math, Context for Learning, Continental Math League, etc.)"

This is insane. School starts in a week, are you telling me they will train all their teachers in Singapore Math before the school starts? Talk about a mess.
[ Reply | Options ]NP: It's a more gradual approach than that, and the letter never said that the school plans to abandon Everyday Math wholesale and replace it with Singapore. It sounded like they are going through a process to keep what works and replace what isn't working with elements from Singapore that work better. But I'm not on the Math Committee; just telling you what I took from the letter.

Can we talk about who she is? She's nice isn't really Principal material. IS she a strong leader? Is she creative with gifted intelligent children, what has she brought to NEST? I think Math at Anderson is superior, but the English could use a restructuring. What did she teach at Midtown West? Bio please!
[ Reply | Options ]Apparently the selection committee was extremely impressed with her, and she was their top choice. No one is perfect, and I am sure that successful principals have a wide range of different skills, abilities and talents. W
[ Reply | Options ]Wonderful news! Dr. Koeke was a big loss to Anderson as I'm sure Jodi Hyde will be to NEST. Lot of movement. Any news about PS87?
[ Reply | Options ]-
NEST parent here, but not the same one as before. Jodi is smart, extremely ambitious and absolutely insincere as far as the parents / students are concerned. Her top priority is Jodi, which is why she came to NEST and then moved on without really having much of an impact.

Ah, LL parent here and we are very happy with Dr Koetke. So are many other parents I know. Either you know different parents or you are making shit up.
[ Reply | Options ]You are lovely! I am not "making shit up". Many parents were unhappy with how she handled the foreign language problem and does not have a huge regard for the arts. She comes across as cold and joyless.
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, I know about the Spanish thing but I wholeheartly agree with her decision to drop it in the higher grades. Also being cold and joyless... hmmm.. I still have to meet a principal who isn't cold and joyless most of the time. This is not really a requirement to be a good principal. As long as the children are getting a good education the principal is doing a good job (and that she does). The fact that she doesn't coddle parents is not really any priority of mine. School is for the children, parents should stay out of it for the most part.

Don't get snarky, just asking. the original reply was 'is she nice?' - not on the top of my list.

I agree. Stop being so dramatic. How are you even an educator? Take a look at yourself. You're pretty much tattling, borderline cyber bullying. Cluster is probably play time for you as well as your kids because you didn't know how to manage your kids and take advantage of that time. (If you're a NEST teacher, speak for yourself.) We're Team Jodi all the way.

Obviously you think I am an educator at NEST since you are referring to Jodi as my boss and seem to be dragging NEST teachers into this. I am an educator, but not at NEST. My child just graduated from the lower school. I was able to hear and see what went on the past four years. I will say no more. Moving on. My apologies to those that were offended and to anyone that was mistakenly pulled into this. TRUCE! Good Luck Anderson! Good Luck, Jodi Hyde! Wishing a successful school year for us all.

np - I know nothing about NEST but - are you really calling out a NEST teacher here and accusing her of posting the anti-Jodi Hyde posts? All of you are crazy.

A Principal whose fast on her feet! School starts in 8days! I think it's great news - Welcome Jodi Hyde! It's been a hard summer for The Anderson Community, moving to a new location with no Principal. I'm certain all the Teachers, Administration and Parents are thrilled to have a new leader in place. Not a moment to soon!

she is an interesting combination of nice and cutthroat, which is probably good for a DOE principal. my K daughter liked her. Congrats to Anderson.

NEST teacher here: As far as I know, I think many of us in the Lower School are pleased to see her go. In her years here, she brought little to the table and not much in the way of fresh new ideas in education. Sadly, I can't say she will have left any real mark or lasting impact on our school.
[ Reply | Options ]NEST parent here - Thanks for your insight. I liked Jodi but maybe I was not aware of her track record. She seemed very focused to me and productive. If you were in her position at NEST what fresh new ideas in education would you have implemented?
[ Reply | Options ]Wow, I'm always interested to see how parents perceive the goings-on at their child's school. No judgments, but what experiences/observations gave you the impression she was focused and productive? I'm interested to see things through parent eyes.
[ Reply | Options ]I thought she was very visible and interactive. A previous poster hit the nail on the head - "and interesting combination of nice and cuthroat". This makes me think that she could have ruffled some feathers and maybe alienated some teachers while implementing her ideas. You said she brought little to the table but in her email to NEST parents she says she did a lot. Here is the text of her email....................... It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that I will be leaving NEST+m Lower School. After three years as the Lower School Assistant Principal an opportunity has arisen to lead The Anderson School. With careful thought, I have decided to leave NEST+m and pursue this opportunity. I never thought I would leave a school as great as NEST+m, but when the opportunity arose I simply had to take advantage of it. Needless to say, this was not an easy decision. I cannot say enough wonderful things about NEST+m, about the talented students, remarkable teachers, dedicated administration and involved parents. During my time at NEST+m I had the opportunity to get to know many of you and develop wonderful relationships, with the foundation being to provide the best educational experience for every student. Many programs and initiatives were instituted during my tenure at NEST+m and I am confident their continuation will help to foster the growth of NEST+m students. Fountas and Pinnell benchmarks, leveled libraries, six annual reports of progress, Literature Circles, and Enrichment Clusters have become part of the landscape for NEST+m Lower School students. Dr. Livanis has my complete assistance in whatever she feels will help make the transition smoother. I am always available to support and confer with my replacement. I thank you all for the support you have given me. Sincerely, Jodi Hyde

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS! I personally was not impressed and thought she did absolutely nothing to support the teaching staff. Never got back to parents, avoided confrontation. God help you if you had a real problem and needed her help (based on real life experience).
[ Reply | Options ]How could parents and teachers have such completely different perspectives of Jodi?
[ Reply | Options ]-
If she is walking the halls and knows the kids by name, most parents are swayed.
[ Reply | Options ]teachers, on the other hand, think of that as a stupid pet trick, and mostly want to be left alone in their classrooms
[ Reply | Options ]NEST teacher again... This is not meant to be obnoxious or anything, but the truth is that parents, even the really involved ones, never will really get a full picture of what goes on in how a school runs on a day-to-day basis.
[ Reply | Options ]NEST parent and a former teacher- I think this goes without saying. BUT I think this is also true for teachers. How many times have you thought you understood the dynamic between the Principal, the VP, Curriculum Coordinator, or the PTA head only to learn something totally different.

I am a parent and I completely agree with this teacher. No love lost here. She was incredibly mediocre at nest, and many parents (other than K parents) would agree, especially those coming from other schools.
[ Reply | Options ]np: I often wonder whether parents' expectations of teacher, staff and principals is unrealistic and misguided. My kid is only in 1st grade, so this is all pretty new to me. But I often hear comments IRL and on UB that make me wonder about parents' expectations. Maybe I'm just old school. But being a professional educator in today's environment must be REALLY stressful and frustrating, in large part due to parents' unrealistic expectations.
[ Reply | Options ]I think the nest teachers continually (for the most part) exceed my expectations. The admin is exactly what you would expect for a public school, not so special, and always by the book.
[ Reply | Options ]Bingo! And in a G+T school she will let the smart kids be smart kids. If you want to save $500,000 on your child's education send him to Anderson and relax. You'll have funds for vacations and summer camp while your child gets a great education that will give him the opportunity to go on to a wonderful college.
[ Reply | Options ]
Well this is total bs. There was a real problem and she worked with my son and got back to me everytime I e-mailed or called. I must say that what some parents think are real problems are not real problems.
[ Reply | Options ]Well, so long as Jodi is not a low IQ bullying egomaniac buls****er and liar, she will be an improvement over the last Anderson principal.
[ Reply | Options ]Oh nice... good to see the good old MEAN and BITTER Anderson parents are still posting. Where have you been? We've missed you!
[ Reply | Options ]np: most of us at anderson liked culot, and were surprised and unhappy to see him go. likewise, most of us are looking happly toward the future with Jodi Hyde, and anticipate good things with her at the helm.
[ Reply | Options ]I"m not being mean or bitter, I'm just telling the painful truth. Parents want to believe that administrators to whom we entrust our beloved children are smart, hard working, idealistic, principled, well informed, thoughtful people whose primary goal is to give our children a good education and a good school experience. There are administrators like that, to be certain; but many are not like that, and pretending that they are is foolish.
[ Reply | Options ]Of course, of course. Mean, bitter people always say "I'm not being mean, I'm just telling the (painful) truth." I have a mother-in-law who is JUST like you. We weren't Culot fans, but name-calling on UB is really easy and who would want the job at all with parents like us. Especially you and your ilk.
[ Reply | Options ]Oh come on. How do you know what my ilk is? I might be of an entirely different ilk than the ilk you accuse me of being part of. And people who insult other people because they insult people - isn't there a circularity there? It's like saying I hate people who are full of hatred. I'm sure the new principal who comes from NEST is prepared to deal wide the varieties of human nature she'll find among the parent body - including the sweetly self righteous. Like you and your ilk.
[ Reply | Options ]
I agree with the original poster, Culot was a not very clever, ambitious and dishonest man. I am happy to see him go.
