Will it be impossible for me to find a part time nanny who will work 4 hours a day Monday through Friday? Everything I've read here seems to suggest that people do not want to share their nannies but my 3 yr old will be starting preschool in September (all day 9-3pm) and I desperately need someone to pick her up and watch her until 7pm every day. I've looked on sittercity.com but they mostly appear to be 21 yr old babysitters and Craigslist ads seem creepy sometimes. Any advice on what to do? Thanks so much.

    • I think the 21 yr old babysitter/college student who wants to work part-time is probably your most realistic option.

      • Really? I would think that they wouldn't be so reliable and I would be scared they would quit on a whim since that's how many are at that age.

    • Place an ad on CL and sittercity detailing your job hours, salary, and age of desired sitter (since that seems to be an issue for you). See what kind of response you get.

      • I also meant to ask: What kind of benefits would I have to offer? I've never had a nany so I know if they're full time I would need to give vacations, sick days, etc. Do I still offer that? Would $300 per week be too cheap for 20 hours?

        • $300 is $15/hour which is good pay for one 3yo. For pt with set hours I always give prorated benefits so two weeks equiv (20 hrs x 2) vacation, paid major holidays, 2 sick days. For pt like occasional date nights, I do not give benefits. But really the job can be whatever you want it to be as long as you advertise it honestly and are upfront about the details. Applicants can choose to reply or not; accept the job or not.

    • If you pay someone more than 20 hours a week, perhaps you'll get a different caliber of nannies...

    • Is there a SAHM whose dc attends your preschool who would like to earn some extra $? Or do a nanny share with one of the other families who are same preschool.

      • The problem is that she doesn't start until September so I don't know anyone yet. I did put her in their summer camp for 3 weeks this summer and was hoping to meet a few parents in the mornings while dropping her off but I clearly didn't realize that all the children were dropped off by their nannies!

    • I've an amazing babysitter for 4 hours a day. She's a nursing student, and comes every afternoon between classes from 1-5. And she's the second one I've had--the first one was great too, but left the city for grad school. I pay $15/hr for twins, w/no official benefits...but, am generous with paid days off/sick days...because I want to keep her happy.

      • No I hadn't heard of that but I'll check it out, thanks. From reading these boards I was actually under the impression that people don't like sharing their nannies bc they're scared they'll have them stolen away. Not true?

        • they mean when a family shares by alternating days. many families have a nanny care for the children of two families at the same time, and it works out well for both families. (No one wants to "steal" the nanny because then they would be paying 100% of her salary! :-)
