Any thoughts on Westchester $$$$ nabes being forced to build affordable housing for minorities? I'm a minority and I think it's great that minorities will access good schools. However, I wonder if it'd be socially best if the neighbors are resentful of the Feds forcing this on them. I wonder why the Feds couldn't just bust up bad practices of the realtors who refuse to sell to minorities rather than this forced affordable housing... Bec not enough minorities can afford homes there?

my friend lived in affordable housing in a good school district in nj bc she was a young single mom (not a minority). and while there were some minorities there, we're still talking a very small handful. what you ended up with were lower income white folks.
[ Reply | Options ]NP: New Jersey has been trying to accomplish what is being suggested in Westchester for years (required under the Mount Laurel decision from the 70s) and I think the consensus is that very little has been achieved in terms of either economic or racial integration. (Our town's "Mount Laurel" housing at this point seems to be occupied entirely by white families priced out of Brooklyn.)

Based on what I've read I'm in favor. Seems like these towns have willfully failed to meet agreed upon goals of affordable housing that were set years ago.
[ Reply | Options ]I'm just uncomfortable with mixing race and class. If they want to recruit minorities, that's one thing but making affordable housing only for minorities might result in white people steretyping minorities as being poor, etc.
[ Reply | Options ]it is not only for minorities. it has to be marketed to areas with high minority pops, but whites cannot be prevented from moving to the affordable housing. of course it will result in animosity and problems initially as does all desegregation, but it is an unavoidable part of the process.
[ Reply | Options ]I was intrigued by this new project but I am very hesitant to even apply. I think the white neighbors will hate my family and why would I put myself through that?
[ Reply | Options ]I understand why someone would choose not to apply. But I also understand why someone would be excited at this opportunity - education opportunity; a desire and belief in the greater social good; etc. Similar to black families who were the first to enroll their child in desegregated schools decades ago. I think it's great that at least the option will be there. Plus it seems that w/o govt intervention Wchester will simply get more and more segregated.
