Do you think 3 kids are doable in the city? Very tentatively entertaining the idea. Moving to the 'burbs is not an option. Space would definitely be an issue, will probably be able to afford 3-bedrooms at most. Does this sound crazy? Has anyone actually done it?

    • I have 3dc in the city. Live in 3bdr apt. It is tight on space, but more importantly it's extremely expensive with schools and childcare. It's like everything else in NYC, with enough money it's fine, without it sucks.

      • Thanks! It makes sense, I figure childcare/preschools would be the biggest expense. But that would be anywhere, I guess. Do your kids share a bedroom? I wonder how much of an issues it becomes down the line.

        • Up til recently 9yo dd and 7yo ds shared. We are going to switch it so 9yo dd has own room and 7yo and 2yo dss share. DD is getting old enough that she wants her own space and I'm sick of the constant fights.

    • What are the ages and genders of the first two? If all three are the same gender, they can share a room, and boys and girls can certainly share a room until they are 7-ish. Most clothes and toys can be shared and handed down, too, regardless of gender, so if you're smart about it, three is not significantly more expensive than two. You just have to have the ability to put your foot down when it comes to distinguishing between wants and needs so your home isn't overrun with all of the kids' stuff. Of course, if you're doing private schools, tuition will kill you, but you seem more concerned with the daily practicals than with overall expense. Borrow one of your kids' friends for a long weekend and see if you can handle three kids in the home and out running errands with you.

      • Thanks! The two I have are just 13 months ( b/g twins) and I"m finding them quite easy and enjoy them immensely, though I do have a nanny since I work full time. Will definitely be going the public school route but preschool/daycare is definitely a concern. Space is the other one.

    • I think 3 kids in a 2BR is tough, but a conv 3BR is doable. w a sahp, it's better bc childcare for 3 dcs is hard and expensive. if you plan on private - then the Q is money. if you plan on public, then it's no different.
