  • Home buying question: once the deal is done, do you tip or send thank you gifts to anyone? Please be specific, like who, what, how much etc. THANKS!

    • I gave a gift to my ILs who gave us the down payment. I tipped the title company people at my closing. The rest of those fuckers (the bank Chase, their broker, their real estate lawyer (who was a total con man) can go to hell. I'm still stinging from our hellish closing. I literally got up from the table at the closing and was about to walk away from the deal and sue everyone of those assholes. Oh, and I sent a nice gift to my attorney who was pure pit bull when it came down to walking. Ugh. You can put everything in writing and people will still try to renege and cheat you. This was when we were in a sellers market, though.

      • For my attorney I gave him a Tiffany decanter with matching glasses and the gift receipt in case he wanted to exchange it. LOL. For the title company I gave them cash once I had the keys. 200 dollars. For my ILs, we took them to Cooperstown to the Baseball Hall of Fame and to a really expensive dinner from a place we found in New York Mag which got great reviews. That was fun and my FIL had really been wanting to go to the BHOF.

      • Yikes - and thanks! We just walked away from Chase, the guy we were working with was a total douche bag and hadn't actually done anythign for us in over a week. I made one call yesteday and as of today we have our interest rate locked in and are just waiting on a few signatures and then we're basically done. Our atty and realtor are both great, hope everyone else is too. Why did you tip the title company people? And, please elaborate what was so bad at your closing...i'm so naive of what may or may not happen... THANKS!

        • Good for you. Chase is the worse. They drag their feet about everything and kept losing our documents. Good thing I had multiple originals on everything. You can't trust them. Then they tried to change the points on us, then outright lied and said we agreed to some ridiculous ARM when we clearly had 15 year fixed. Then the sellers suddenly wanted to stay in the place 3 months longer but would pay rent, then wanted us to pay for the moving costs. We were first time homebuyers too and I think they thought they could run a game on us, but my attorney was not playing that. I think they realized the sold way under the market rate and was looking for a way out of the deal.

          • ^^^ Oh, I wasn't being sarcastic when I said good for you. I'm glad you were able to get another mortgage with another bank. Congratulations. I think now that it's a bit of a buyers market you won't see this type of poor behavior at your closing. ~crossing fingers~

            • Oops! Apparently, it's an unspoken custom to tip the closing insurance people. Ugh. I would not have given those fuckers one dime. But my husband was a bit battled fatigued and was just like, okay. Maybe some real estate people can explain. But I will say, we did have a clean title and all paperwork was filed properly and timely.

    • It's custom in New York to tip the title closer and your lawyer will most likely include that in your closing costs. (Most title closers are independent contractors that don't get paid much by the title companies they represent.) Nothing required or expected for anyone else. I'm a lawyer and when I used to do residential closings for my firm, occasionally I'd get thank you gifts from clients afterwards, but certainly never expected them.
