    • Was told by our pediatrician that cool mist is recommended if the room tends to be hot, warm mist if the room is more on the chilly side

    • We only use warm mist in the winter months because it helps keep our noses hydrated. Cool mist machines need constant cleaning (bacteria).

    • they both need regular cleaning and water changes and both get moldy easily. generally the current rec is for cool mist to avoid the risk of burns that can happen with the warm mist. they both increase humidity in the air and the warm mist cools quickly anyway so the functional difference is minimal.

      • The warm mist machine we have does not get moldy at all. The heating element is enclosed (machine not hot to the touch) and although I clean it regularly, I mainly do so to eliminate mineral build up. I refill the tank every day because it's empty, but I don't need to "change" the water.

        • which brand? I have never had a single item that can be constantly exposed to water and never require a cleaning to avoid mold buildup.

          • We have a Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier (not sure of the model number). The tank is small and lasts about a day for us. It comes apart and can go in the dishwasher.

            • A humidifier that can go in dishwasher is a HUGE plus. That is probably why you aren't getting mold since you are essentially disinfecting it when it goes in the dishwasher. Good to know this in case I need one in the future!

              • Also note that the warm mist vapor itself is bacteria-free, whereas the cool mist is not.
