Decorator moms: we have a wood kitchen/dining table that looks terrible despite my best efforts with placemats, etc. Want to buy a new table but want a surface that holds up well with kids. I have been looking at some of the modern tables with glass tops or other surfaces that stay nicely. Any ideas. I like wood for the traditional aspect but hate how beat up it looks. TIA.

    • My MIL puts a tablecloth on with a see-through plastic tablecloth over top. You can just wipe up easily (no tablecloth to wash). It will protect the wood underneath. There are tables with tile tops, too.

      • I have to admit that we have a plastic tablecloth on ours all the time unless we're having company. We got a new table when ds was 3 and within a week there were a few dings on it from his fork and this was our solution.

    • this is a fabulous table with a contemporary design, but a "classic" in the contemporary world. The laminate and marble versions hold up great. http://www.dwr.com/product/furniture/dining/saarinen-collection/saarinen-round-dining-table.do?sortby=ourPicks

      • lol "this fabulous table" is the biggest cliche going these days. if i have to look at another saarinen tulip table i will put my eye out. how many do you think they sold at the domino fire sale? a dozen?

        • It's both fabulous and a little too popular. So, if you're the type of person who named their children Addison and Guinnevere you avoid the table. If you went with Olivia and Jack b/c, well you really like them and to hell with everyone else, then go for it.

    • Have a glass top cut to fit on top of the wood table. I did this for my office desk and love it.

      • glass and little kids can be a bad combo unless you really make it too thick to break and make sure the edges are sufficiently smooth, rounded, etc.
