Return to talk

Hijack: I wasn't raised by my father, but went to visit him and work for his and his brother's printing business with I was 20. He was a total jerk--tried to charge me for my calls home to my mom (he didn't pay a penny toward raising me) as well as his calls to his mom. Before I left, I pointed out to him that men are supposed to take care of their offspring. After I wrote to him to demand he pay me my wages (he withheld them for the $20 phone bill), he sent me a check. Attached to it was a little slip of paper that read: "Your knowledge of biology is exceeded only by your disposition". Always wondered what, exactly, that meant. My disposition is even worse than my knowledge of biology?

      • OP: No. He's my father. My parents were married (when he was 18 and my mother 22--she was pg and claims she had no clue how young he was until after the divorce). And I look a lot like him.

        • Oh read it again. He means 'sure I am your father good job on the biology there, of course your knowledge of biology (which is good) is exceeded only by our poor disposition (which is worse)' so you are correct

      • Thanks. Always knew he was trying to be insulting, but I remember sitting there with friends 20 years ago trying to figure out wtf this commentmeant. It was typed, too, and on a slip of paper of standard width but only 2" or so long. I saw him one more time before he died last year, but didn't have the nerve to ask what the hell he was getting at all those years before.

        • he wouldn't have explained it. (he couldn't have! it makes no sense!) i'm sure he wouldn't even have remembered (or would have said that's not what he said because . . . it makes no sense! ;o)

    • My take: Your knowledge of biology is (in his estimation) bad = referring to your position that men are supposed to take care of their offspring, which he clearly didn't agree with. And that knowledge was bad, but not as bad as your attitude in life (disposition), which he clearly thought was no good. A mean and hollow man's attempt at a smart retort. Don't let him have what he wanted. Try to let it go. Entirely. Good luck, and sorry about crap dad.

      • Thanks! I let it go long ago, but it was sort of like a riddle, you know? And the other post reminded me of it. My father had my sister and me, then three kids with three different girlfriends, then two more with his second wife--and he managed to get away with only supporting the two by the second wife (though she ended up raising them, in part, on welfare). So, nope, he didn't agree with my statement about how fathers should support their offspring. I'm glad I met him and found and married a guy who's his exact opposite!

        • what's funny is that it is as much sociology/anthropology as biology. some males of species do take care of their offspring.
