    • My son had a 106 fever when he was a year old. I knew he was sick and kept calling the nurse at this god awful HMO I had, who was like Tylenol and cold compresses. Finally just said, fuck this, and took him to the local emergency room. They took his temperature and immediately gave him Tylenol rectally and packed him ice. It was one of the worse days of my life. I should have went with my gut in the first place and not let the HMO or the doctor blow me off. I HATE HMOs and I'd rather pay out of pocket for everything than to go to one of these chops shops again.

      • but these ARE things you could ahve done at home in order to bring down his fever. they sell acetominophen suppositories at the drug store and in a pinch you can administer liquid tylenol rectally with a dropper. and i know you have ice...

        • They didn't tell me to do those things and I was a new mom with a book on treating illnesses and an HMO and a doctor who should have helped me instead of saying...it's fine. The fever will go down. Turned out it was pneumonia. My doctor was a quack and I switch immediately. I don't know how to treat pneumonia at home.

          • ds has had a fever over 105 3x and of course we call the doctor (NOT HMO) and we get the same advice as you. and it's never been pneumonia.

          • I left my HMO after (in my opinion) I got bad care that almost killed me and my dd. Still, dd#2 has had pneumonia as a virus with 104 fever and that does just get treated at home. if it is bacterial the antibiotics will help, but it can just be a virus (or antibiotic resistant) and you are just home treating.
