          • we want there to be a reason so we can assure ourselves that we'll be able to identify the warning signs in our own lives (including ourselves, friends, family, neighbors, etc). if it is random, it can just happen and we don't want that.

            • I agree, no one wants to think their sister could take the kids on a camping trip and then bug out on the drive home.

          • none of the kids were "babies"--I don't why people keep referring to them as such

            • you're so right. getting into a car having down 15 or 20 ounces of vodka with an infant is the behavior of a monster. but a 5 y/o? not so much. pound those shots!

              • oh come on, it IS just annoying to say "two small babies" when it was really a 2 year-old, two 5-year olds, and a 7 and 9 year old. "two small babies" sounds very very annoying in this context.

      • Because I think it was so horrifying and something that people could relate to--mom with car full of kids, mysterious crash--and now with all of these revelations, it becomes something bizarre that we can also suddenly distance ourselves from, like "oh, that would never be me, thank God!" but it's still horrifying. I'm not usually a rubbernecker, but this story has gripped me the past couple of days.

        • me too. I can't explain it. It's hard not to be curious about such extreme behavior. okay, someone is a functioning alcoholic, that I get. But murdering 4 children, swilling vodka as you speed down the highway...??

        • strangely, the owner of the campsite, where the family vacationed for 3 years, swears "on my grandmother's grave" that she never saw either one of them with a drink. she must have really had everyone fooled.

            • no, but she saw them relaxing over the course of a week or so for three years in a row. you think she would have at least seen them sitting outside with a beer once or twice.

              • yeah. and i read that she spoke to her that morning and didn't smell any alcohol. something here doesn't add up but i'm afraid it's just my blinders on b/c i don't want it to make sense. i don't want to believe that she had a drinking problem, that her dh ignored it, that she got in the car and killed a whole bunch of cute little girls and some total strangers.

          • See, I think the husband's also a heavy drinker. How they managed to hide their drinking from the campground lady is anyone's guess, but they were probably drinking vodka with soft drinks and transferring the empty bottles from the trailer to the car.

            • Hiding it from the owner of a campground doesn't seem like it would take much. And how much could the campground owner possibly be paying attention to every person camping there??? If the Schulers had a screaming match, people would pay attention but most of the time that doesn't happen.
