    • Whenever Walter said "there are no wars tonight", I truly believed him.

      • I watch those old clips of him and wish there were someone like him on still. they don't seem dated at all. so many childhood memories flood back too.

    • Guess I am too young, do not know who he is. When I asked some older family members they all said "Some news guy". Not a very hot topic I'm guessing. Sad though.

      • I am 29 with a dh and a 2 year old. My family never really watched a lot of TV so it's not really that big a deal. I don't understand why everybody freaks out when a celebrity dies? They are human just like everybody else. They will all die at some point no matter how famous they are. DUH.

        • I am not "freaked out" by WC's death, nor is he a "celebrity" in my book. Just an excellent journalist/anchor, the likes of which we have not seen since. You, are the other hand, are clearly an idiot.

        • I bet you cares when Princess Di or JFK Jr died. Really ignorance is not something to be proud of.

          • Ignorant is the wrong word. Princess Di was a humanitarian who was a great person and helped a lot of people. She was a treasure and I did feel bad about that yes but there is a big difference between a humanitarian who was devoted to helping people and a journalist. Sad I would even have to explain that. Shows how much the world is full of people who would put Princess Di at the same level as a TV journalist.

        • you don't need to freak out, but at 29 you should be aware of the culture you're in and walter cronkite really was an integral part of the media for a long time. i'm only a few years older than you and although i never watched him on the nightly news, i did see him on some specials and he is sometimes referred to in the newspaper, on tv and in conversation. i just don't know how you can go through life not knowing who he is.

    • Walter represents THE BEST in journalism. My children are 18 and 20 and know who he is as I have discussed him with my children the same way I talk about MJ, Miles Davis, John Lennon, Julia Child. Walter covered America at her best---The Lunar Walk and at our worst---The assassination of JFK. I appreciate that the news is very different for my children with the internet, 24-hour news cycles, and blogging. But the technology does not change the fact that you have to tell the truth in journalism. Walter always told the truth, he did not give opinion. He gave FACTS. His kind of integrity in news reporting will never be seen again. Rest in peace, Walter. There are not wars in heaven.

    • I'm too young to remember him on the news. I know him from a series of books he wrote for sailors about the various ports of call on the Eastern US. Great books. A God send when you had a dad who never quite got the charting/ETA thing right.
