Is it just me, or has it become 'fashionable' to have a baby? All of a sudden everyone I know is trying to get pregnant, whether their circumstances are good or not. I hear them talking more about the stroller they want and the bedding for the crib than anything else. It just seems like a few years ago when suddenly everyone was smoking cigars and drinking martinis. Except this is fad that you can't just stop when it gets "old"

    • i seriously doubt that people are having babies because it is fashionable. it does become more common at a certain age, though... i wonder if it's just that you are getting older.

    • There is this thing called a clock and it ticks away in all of us. It's probably your age (or the age of the people you are haning out with). We want to procreate - there is no ideal time to have a baby. And you sound a little judgemental - what's that about?

      • I think it's just hearing more about the baby registry than the baby. I don't know, I guess part of it is age but it's like they get done with the wedding and now they want more presents. Of course, not everyone is like this but I see it especially in young women in their 20s. They've barely been married and they're trying to have children right away because they want a kate spade diaper bag. Guess I feel the same way about brides who are more worried about the wedding than the marriage.

        • Until recently (when women began making great strides in the work force), it was normal to get married and start a family. I don't understand what your complaint is really.

        • What do you want them to say about the fetus inside them? Honest, you act as if they should run around discussing it?????

    • If you will list the acceptable topics of conversation for women ttc or newly expecting - I'll do my best to get the information out there so you can rest easier.

    • OP, I get what you're saying, and the responders above are either obtuse or the very people you're complaining about. I can't stand materialistic, shallow people either. But some people are like that - no inner thoughts interesting enough to share.

    • It really seems that way to me, too, OP. No one seems to be putting off procreating because of the economy, even if they don't even have an income. But the ever-present logic is that "there's no perfect time to have a baby," so they just throw caution to the wind. And of course everyone is expected to procreate at some point in their lives.

    • maybe it's a natural, small boom? i've been taking my dd to a gym/music class for a year and the women with the same-aged kids all have the children i know, and now a little carseat with a newborn. literally, 8 out of 11 women just delivered in the last 1-3 months, and i'm expecting. maybe it's natural since we want our kids spaced the same amount of time apart. either way it's funny to watch.

    • This is a dumb theory. A baby inspires much stronger feelings of attachment than a cigar or a martini. Choosing a stroller and crib bedding are perfect valid ways of channeling one's excitement about an imminent birth.

    • Having babies has become 'fashionable'? That's so silly. Nesting and procreating have been 'in style' since the beginning of humankind. Will your baby be born walking and sleeping on the floor?

    • It's you. When I was in my early 30's I felt the same way -it seemed like everyone all of a sudden was getting pregnant, celebs too. Also, there were a lot of celebs writing books on how to have a god pregnancy, like they were the first ones ever to have a baby. Now I realize it was just because my peer group and the celebs my age were all getting pregnant.
