      • The reason I ask...I have many, many friends who have been unemployed for close to a year. Smart, accomplished people. I don't know what to say to them anymore.

        • don't offer platitudes or "things will work out". simply say "i'm sure it's really hard for you" and that's it. there might also be a bright side to it, but that's really not your place to suggest.

    • I often wonder how these people are surviving. If we lost our jobs, we would blow through retirement in a year maybe 2 years with cutting out everything

    • My dh (and sole breadwinner) has been out of work just a little over a year. There is not anything you can say and the best thing is not saying anything about it. It's hard to be constantly reminded. It will take time for the recession to end and unemployment has been extended, there are food stamps (only give us $40 a week for a family of 3), and WIC, and food banks. All of these options we have utilized in the last year. By the way, if someone you know is unemployed - don't keep giving them updates or estimations of the recession - it's just another reminder.

    • Several...including my DH (who has been out of work for almost a year). We're okay - we're forunate enough to have some family help and a trust fund (which was supposed to be for "fun", later in life). DH is working on an 8-week freelance project right now and loving it (and the joke is: "He's a rockstar...b/c he's happy to be working at all!") and we hope that he'll make some sort of connection or find some sort of lead. DH does not like to talk about it (even with me)...and he has become the master of finding free events and discounts.

    • The 3 IBers I know that lost their jobs have all found new ones. Some took a few months to do so.

    • quite a few but most of them found something. only an arrogant hf friend still looking after a year and i'm sure he's gotten a lot less arrogant.

    • A lot, including myself (I work in editorial, and at know close to a dozen fellow writer/editors who are out of work). I've been unemployed for 7 months. If one more person tells me that maybe it's a blessing, since it's allowed me to spend more time with my db, I'll vomit. Yes, I have more time for the baby, but even cutting back on EVERYTHING (cancelled mag subscriptions, cable TV, vacation, no more restaurants EVER and when we need a babysitter we have a friend come over for a few hours) we can't make ends meet and are in real dire straigs. So please, as above poster says, don't say, "things will work out" or "there's a bright side!" Just acknowledge that the situation sucks and that you'll keep your eye out for work for me.

      • ^^^ sorry about the typos. It's late on a Sunday, but there's no excuse since as stated above, I make (made?) my living as a writer. But truly, it's shocking how many people I know who've lost their jobs. And these are really talented editorial/publishing professionals. We have some family help, but eventually that will end.
