We moved to burbs so kids will go to highly regarded public schools and I can take time off from work. With HHI of $450 combined, we could not make owning an apt, 2 dcs in private plus full time nanny work in NYC. That is pathetic although do worry that education would have have been better in NYC the peers not so much.

    • If they're highly regarded public schools you should be fine. In city I'd worry more about small pool of classmates to choose from as friends in private. In public you find the right friends, don't have to choose from what's available.

      • op: we thought kids were nice but the some of them came from so much money and lived in huge apts with multiple summer homes, tons of toys, and drivers. we noticed ds began to notice the differences and did not want my child to grow up always feeling like a have not. we feel here there is a better balance of families

        • "multiple summer homes"? Even in private, that's very unusual.

          • just a few had "multiple" but often grandparents had a nice place in FL, then a place in Hamptons, etc

        • you should have gone with public schools then. Now you will be ferrying your kids to activities and infantilizing them until they're sixteen, when you'll throw them some car keys and hope they don't crash. I don't understand suburban parents.

          • That's because you're a freak and don't understand much about suburbia!

          • np: whoa, that was not my experience of growing up in the suburbs... i'm not sure i agree that suburban kids are any more babied than the city kids i know. and the ferrying seems to be about the same, you just have to drive in the suburbs.

      • either could we! but after nanny, rent, school cost plus few activities and other life costs things were ok but tight and no realistic savings

        • You were making decisions that limited your choices. Millions of families in New York City live on a household income under 55K.

    • where did you move? we are looking to move for schools and space, but I will still be working and we'll still need nanny. doesn't seem like burbs will be much cheaper for us.
