had dd last Tuesday. she was latching on in the hospital and we were doing ok. had to supplement with formula bc I don't have enough milk (breast reduction but am producing some). We came home yesterday and she won't latch on at all. She screams when I put her to my breast. Tried formula on my nipple & left a message for my lactation consultant. Anyone have any suggestions? I hate pumping.

    • First I always did both for both dbs (fyi-5 yr old rarely rarely sick) and w/first I would put him on a bottle, get him sucking then switch to breast. I quickly had to supplement anyway since didn't make enough on my own. Both weaned themselves off. Whatever you do make bf/formula decision your own.

    • I haven't met a mom yet that likes pumping. So... it's part of breastfeeding sometimes and for you in particular. You HAVE to pump. You body makes what is taken out, if you don't take it out (either by baby or pump) it won't make. Sorry, but get that pump going NOW!

    • I had the exact same thing...and it was 2 months of banging my head against the wall. Despite 36D, couldn't produce milk. Never heard of this before I was in the situation, but totally unhappy w/the whole thing. Got soo, so, so much easier when I went formula. You may have luck w/lactation consultant, maybe not. Don't fret it....it will work out!

    • Have you tried a Supplemental Nursing System? They are kind of a pain, but allow you to supplement with formula while your baby is latched on (possibly reducing your baby's frustration not getting enough milk), and helping to boost your hormones so you are producing as much milk as you can. There are also supplements you can try. Talk to your lactation consultant about these. In the mean time, keep her skin to skin with you as much as you can, allowing her to look for your breast when she's ready (helping her if you notice feeding cues). Also, check out http://www.bfar.org/ for lots of info on bf after reduction. Good luck!

      • PLEASE dont use the SNS! its the biggest waste and will only make you more frustrated than you already are. give it some time. your baby is less than a week old. you should consider pumping though. i was in your shoes a while ago nad the advice that my lactation consultant gave me is this: here are your priorities - #1 make sure your baby gets enough food - breast milk from you, the bottle or formula. 2 protect your supply 3. you can work out any breastfeeding issues over time

    • Congrats - don't panic. I had breast reduction as well and was able to nurse along with lots of supplementing. Be sure to visit www.bfar.org - breast feeding after reduction website. VERY HELFPFUL! They also have a book you might want to read. And make sure you work with a lactation consultant that has worked with mothers who have had BR. I used Kate Sharp who I got to through BI and she was AWESOME! I also took fenugreek and knew that even if my ds was getting a couple of tablespoons a day, that he would get the benefits. Don't let anyone make you crazy. Also, you may want to try a nipple shield. That worked for me. GL!
