I'm trying to decide between W. Village and BPC to move. I know PS 41 is considered one of the best schools, but b/c of the waitlists, I'm assuming we can't really rely on it, and might end up with PS 3. Is PS 89 considered as good as PS 3? Also, there might be some rezoning to PS 11 - is that as good as the others? Thanks.

    • At this point, all the "good" schools have (or will have) wait lists. 41/3 in the village (about 96 long before they moved the pre-k program) and 234 in BPC also had Wait list problems. We love the West Village and there are a number of private options (LREI, CVS...) that you can also apply to. PS 11 is ok, but not great.

      • BTW: the 234 "extra" kids a few years ago ended up in a Chinatown school. Counting on getting a spot a public school of your choice is a gamble right now in this city. Too many kids, too few spots.

    • I would move to BPC - what a wonderful place for children. 89 is great. So are 3/41 - 11 will be in the near future - how old is your child?

      • Sorry I didn't see your post until now. My younger child is 16 months, so we have a while before K, but I'd like to get situated beforehand. I worry that BPC might be nice for now, but not for very long (like, they'd outgrow it, or want to move out b/c it's isolated, in a few years).

        • np: we've been in bpc for 11 years, have so far raised two kids (planning another), and can tell you that things are only getting better and better here. ps276 is due to open next year - the 'green' school - and it sounds like it will be amazing.

    • Didn't PS 89 also have a waiting list for K this year? Did overflow from 234 and 89 both go to the kindergarten classes in the Tweed Courthouse?

    • 89 and 234 have waitlists because parents who want one of those two got tweed (tweed will feed into new BPC south school (opening 9/10) and the one opening in the seaport (opening 9/11)). at least there you are guaranteed a seat at one of the four schools. 41/3 cleared waitlists this year by moving the pre-k classes out. but pre-k parents have been promised they will be back next year. no one knows what will happen in that zone yet. DOE is publicly saying they will move GVMS out of 3 for fall 2010 but who knows. if it were me, i'd take my chances in 234 zone. have a feeling they are going to rezone tribeca to 234, northern BPC to 89, southern BPC and financial district among the 2 new schools.

      • Thanks so much. So, there are two new schools? And what is Tweed? Was it any good this year? Thanks.
