My daughter came home from camp today and said that when the kids wouldn't sit quietly at the end of the day, the counselors made them hold their arms straight up in the air for an extended period of time. If someone dropped their arms or spoke, they extended the time. My daughter said kids were crying as they blood drained out of their arms, and the counselors just turned a blind eye. Sounds torturous and abusive to me. Anyone else ever heard of this method of discipline?

    • This sounds psychotic. I would call the camp director and remove my daughter.

          • I guess no reason...except that I want to confront them and get their side tomorrow just to make sure there's something my daughter's leaving out or not explaining correctly.

          • OK, fine... just in case anyone can corroborate... it's the Vanderbilt Y in midtown. My daughter's 8 and this is her third summer there. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

            • well that's a comfort; the counselors sound a bit sadistic to do this to 8 y/o/s.

    • Ask parents of other kids that go there, to confirm.

    • I use to have to do this at a private school I went to. It was used as discipline but there are far more effective ways these days to use, that shouldn't even be an option.

    • I remember this from my own camp days. It is harmless. "Blood draining from their arms" is a little melodramatic. The kids that cried are the sissies (I remember the ones).
