Columbia vs. Cornell NICU. I keep hearing that Columbia's NICU is better, but why? Is there any hard data out there?

    • recommended termination mom? i wanted to give a plug to the nicu at st vincent's manhattan. the doctors were fantastic but what i thought was particularly nice were the nurses both in the nicu (where are there mean nicu nurses?) and on the l&d floor which is where the bedrest people hang out. they have a lot of time and patience for the patients.

            • did you end up switching doctors? my advice would be that if you are happy where you are, stay there.

        • if i were you, i'd walk in to both hospitals (or are you on bedrest already?). i have to guess that the nicus are equally good. it's like getting a 98 on a test instead of a 97. both are an A+ and that one number could easily be reversed next time. but the less important factors can be very important for you if you'll be stuck there long term. internet access, availability of nursing staff, visitor policies, etc. you want to be in a place that'll take care of you b/c you'll be stuck in bed for a looooong time.

          • Thanks - these are great points. I'm on home bedrest, but my husband is going to go see them. :)

    • doesn't it become splitting hairs? Columbia=Presbyterian has one of the foremost in the country, I think, but that isn't to say Cornell's isn't great

    • This keeps not working and I keep writing fairly extensive replies. Spent time at the Columbia NICU. Have your husband see both. The visitor policy at MSCHONY is generous and kind. They'll act as gatekeepers if you don't want visitors too. The nursing staff was for the most part lovely. It is difficult to sit there all day and you have to advocate for yourself sometimes. If you can find, randomly scattered on UB my other replies, they may be more helpful.
