what do you think would be a more fun vacation for dcs ages 3-6. Choice #1 is something "big" like sesame place or hershey park. Choice #2 is something like mystic seaport or a renaissance fair. Choice #3 is smaller attractions like a children's amusement park, a science museum, maybe the crayola factory, going to see the amish, etc. Any suggestions are welcome. Only a 2 day 1 night trip and preferably within a 2-3 hour drive of nyc. thanks very much!
21 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]you know, as i wrote it i thought it sounded weird. would you believe lancaster county actually puts it in as a "thing to do"? their list under "things to do" reads as follows: Amish, Attractions...Golf...Museums: etc. i wonder what the amish would think of that. i mean, they have to know people are interested but somehow putting it in as a "thing to do" seemed a little wrong to me.
[ Reply | Options ]was this on the lancaster website? if so, they don't worry as the Amish don't do computers anyway ;) (I'm just full of bad jokes tonight!)
[ Reply | Options ]The Amish have created a booming tourism industry with plenty of shops, restaurants, buggy rides to partake in. They are glad to share info about how their lives are lived. Lancaster is really interesting.

We did both Sesame Place and the Amish Country on a 3 day 2 night trip and it was good. One night will be a bit much to try to do both. Pennsylvania Dutch country is really good! I suggest Sesame Place for a full day and a hotel with pool and drive through animal attraction at Great Adventure for the next day.

sesame or hershey seem so gross to me. mystic has the beach, the aquarium, clam shack, etc.
[ Reply | Options ]hershey would be way too much for that age, and by the way hershey is very very very clean the nicest park ive seen in a long time..we did lancaster with our little guys at that age and it was a lot of fun. we stayed at bird in hand family inn it has 2 indoor pools that are very warm..there is a lot to do around there the train museums, see amish farms, etc. it's really a nice trip.
[ Reply | Options ]My first choice would be mystic, 2nd choice lancaster and would not do sesame place or hershey. Maybe also check out some places in Vermont - maybe take them to a working farm or something, ben & jerrys factory.
[ Reply | Options ]I grew up in the town the crayola factory is in. It's only 1.5 hours outside the city and you can make that a day trip if you have a car. Sesame place is more of a vacation so I would vote for that. And 3-6 is too young for hershey unless you want a chocolate charged set of monsters to ride big roller coasters.
[ Reply | Options ]We take one long weekend a year and plan a "local" long weekend. Anything within +/- 5 hours. We take a map, take turns picking, close our eyes and pick a spot. Then we find the closest hotel with a pool and go for a few days. Great way to see the North East. We have done Freeport, ME; Carlisle, PA; and a few small towns in NJ/NY. On the Carlisle trip we hit Crayola and Hershey (as well as Gettysburg.) Hershey tour was hokey but kids loved it. (Wrong time of year so I don't know about park.) The kid's museum in Maine was awesome. And the museum in Bath, ME was also really good. (Maybe too much for a 3yo...) Oh, and ME is more than 2-3 hours.
[ Reply | Options ]^^^ Oh yeah, the Aquarium in Mystic is nice (but wicked expensive.) And there is this totally hokey dinosaur excavating thing up there that is perfect for those two ages. I'll watch this post and if you are interested and can't find it via Google -- I'll get the info for you.) Now that I think about it, for that age, that would be a good 2 day trip. *** I was going to suggest RI. Narragansett has a great beach, it is on the sound so the water is awesome but not huge waves so great for kids. And if weather is shitty, it is a 1/2 hour (or less, no traffic) to Newport.

We just got back from Lancaster County with a 3 and 7 year old and it was GREAT. Dutch Wonderland was perfect for those ages. They both had a great time there. A couple of blocks away is an Amish museum type thing and you can take a buggy ride with an Amish guide. A couple of miles away is the Stausburg Railroad which has the oldest running steam train. It's about a 45 min round trip ride. Across the street from there is a train museum. That's pretty much all you can do in 2 days. There is lots more to do (we were there for 4 days and could have stayed longer). I highly recommend it. I would stay in Stausburg rather than the town where Dutch Wonderland is. Much cutier and a great ice cream store in town.
