  • Designing a newborn's room and wondering about curtains/shades. Do newborns need total darkness or is light coming in from the window not an issue?

    • For some babies it does seem to be an issue but the another way to look at it is do you want to make it an issue but training db to only sleep in a totally dark room. My dcs have had both blinds and curtains and it made no difference to their sleep.

    • We have shades and it is a signal to them that it is time to go down.

    • While in theory it's better to get babies used to being able to sleep with light and noise, in reality most babies sleep way better when it's total darkness. So I suggest room darkening shades/curtains.

    • we only had wood blinds which blocked light well, but at 5 mos it became clear that we needed something heavier. we added heavy dark curtains w/a liner from PB and it really helped regulate dd's naps very well.
