Did anyone see this?http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/fashion/05nycprep.html?_r=2&hpw. So funny, especially the quote :"Victoria Goldman, the author of “The Manhattan Guide to Private Schools and Selective Public Schools,” suggested that the teenagers’ behavior may have something to do with the private schools in the show — which she said are not top-shelf. (There are no students from Dalton, Brearley, Chapin and Collegiate, to name a few of the most highly regarded schools in the city.)"

Her comment was about private schools, not Stuy. I agree that NBS is not bottom. I do also agree though that a Brearley or a Trinity or a HM DC would not participate in a show like that. A school like NBS, although not "bottom" admits a more diverse (IQ wise) group of DCs than the tt schools
[ Reply | Options ]That is not really true. And are you trying to say that dc who are not "gifted" are more likely to be tacky? Kind of an off thing to say.
[ Reply | Options ]I know a dd who went to round 2 at Hunter and had 99x3 on erbs (her mom showed me the report). Didn't get into fc, but did get into NBS. Lots of 99x3 girls there--best bet for a young summer with a high score. And, no, my dd is not at NBS.
[ Reply | Options ]I feel sorry for any child on that program because obviously they either have no guidance or wouldn't take any.
[ Reply | Options ]OR: I said that NBS has a wider range...so yes some 99x3 DCs go there. Dwight and BWL OTOH do not have a wide range, just the bottom of the curve
[ Reply | Options ]That is not true at all. Both Dwight & BWL have a wider range, but the top at those schools are very smart. NBS does not really have any wider of a range than the TT, which btw do have more of a range than people on here think.
[ Reply | Options ]The only smart DCs at Dwight and BWL are those that have ADD or some other disorder. NBS are the tt wannabes that were just not good enough for tt. Simple fact
[ Reply | Options ]np; my friend's dd who got 99erb and is a very smart girl is at NBS. Her family likes structure and the girl is very shy.
[ Reply | Options ]nnp: i know families that have turned down TT for NBS - one got into tt co-ed and wanted SS and another hated Chapin.

That's silly. Our girl goes to NBS and got a 99 on her erb. If she didn't get into Brearly, Chapin or Spence is more likely because we her parents are nobodies from nowhere. That's not her fault.
[ Reply | Options ]Well, my dc got into and goes to one of those 3 & her parents are nobodies from nowhere and was WLed at NBS. That said, it is a fabulous school as are many of the privates in NYC. Getting in to any these days is really a crap shoot. . . VG was totally off-base and crude with her "top shelf" comments.

According to her blog, the student from NBS only missed 2 questions on the SAT math section. A Brearley student was quoted in the NY Times about Gossip Girl a year or two ago, and there was a subsequent letter from the head to counter the student's lack of judgment. The head of NBS has written eloquently about the involvement of a student in NY Prep: http://www3.timeoutny.com/newyork/kids/blog/2009/06/04/the-next-great-reality-horror-show-for-nyc-parents-nyc-prep/
[ Reply | Options ]Brearley is too harsh, though, when it comes to any kind of self-criticism. There was a B girl on FA who talked about her school in NYT and she was disciplined big time. Not the girl's fault and did feel the school came down her too hard for something not nearly as bad as any reality show. Such a cold place.
[ Reply | Options ]Here's the link to that article (I was wrong, it was not Gossip Girl related): http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/16/nyregion/thecity/16prep.html?scp=1&sq=september%2016,%202007%20brearley&st=cse

Schools should really teach children to be cautious with the media. Here's the Times article with private school girls watching Gossip Girl: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/16/fashion/16gossip.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

I think the point is Victoria Goldman's comment is way out of line. Makes me wonder how subjective her books are. Ironically her blog is down so you can't send her a comment. to say NBS is at the bottom, and we don't go there, is ridiculous. She lost credibility with that single comment, IMO
[ Reply | Options ]My dc goes to Dalton, and I think they would be asked to leave if they made the decision to be held up to ridicule in a crappy show like NY Prep. Why would anyone let their kid or their student be involved in being made to look like an idiot. Poor parenting, poor administration.
[ Reply | Options ]My dc is also at Dalton but I don't think it's right to expel a child bec of this. That seems too draconian and undemocratic even though I really hope nobody from our school will decide to do trash like Bravo reality shows. Only bec I think it's worth preserving freedom of speech over saving face/ reputation of your school. But I think the schools probably need to proactively discourage their kids from doing such shows.

Virginia is also a hypocrite. Look at her writing about NBS in her book, and it is clear that she is lying in one of two places (i.e. her book or NYT). And, yes, my dd is at NBS, and I m very pissed off. Especially, because my analysis of schools was partially based on her write up. (Not to say that the final decision was based on the book, of course).
[ Reply | Options ]everyone who is irate should email her at her address at victoriagoldman@nycedu1st.com (its on her website - its not private)- she lost one book sale here. Not surprised her blog is down.
