I am giving my nanny Friday afternoon off - is it okay for me to ask her to come in a half-hour or an hour early (DH and I are trying to get some stuff done). I would normally pay her OT for this. I don't want to ask her because she'll say yes but I don't want to be unfair.

      • No, sorry, it doesn't work like that. I treat her the same way I like to be treated. FWIW, I do the same for my employees at work.

        • Oh come on. My boss does it all the time, scheduling meetings early or late in the day. If you pay well and treat your nanny well, this should not be an issue. Now that kids are in school/camp our babysitter gets so much time off that I have no qualms about asking her to come early or stay late. We had discussed it and she is absolutely fine with it.

      • nanny here. sure, go for it. if you are giving her a paid friday off, it's perfectly reasonable to ask for other hours during the week, to make up for it. Of course she might not be able to (she may have other plans), but nothing wrong with asking.

    • Some will say it is fine. Personally, if I ask my nanny to either come early or stay late, I always pay OT b/c it's beyond her work day. If she happens to get extra time off, I consider it a "gift." Poor woman works so hard, I'm pscyched when I can give her some time off.

      • I know, I feel the same way. We're trying to save some money, but we could really use the extra time to get stuff done. I suppose the money, on the whole, matters less to us than to her, relatively speaking.

    • I think it would have been fine if you had asked her to come in early at the same time you told her that she'd have the afternoon off, but bringing it up now makes it awkward.

      • I haven't told her yet she has Friday off, because I wasn't sure if Grammy and Grandpa would be coming. Thanks, ladies, I'll ask her to come in half an hour early tonight and let her know she is leaving at noon.
