  • My DD's birthday is August 25 and will be turning 4 this year. Are most private school(including TT ss) hold back summer birthday kids? Will she be applying next year(instead of coming fall)? I am afraid if she gets too young comments and apply next year, we will get too old letter and SO?

    • I am not sure about the answer but my birthday is 8/25 too. I was held back and I think it was the best thing for me.

    • 99% yes. If you are talking TTs, unless you're willing to cough up 7 figure donation, forget about it. If dd has 99x3 ERB, excellent everything else and first choice a 3rd tier/4th tier school, I think that school will/might accept your dd but is that what you want?

    • I know that Berkeley Carroll and Saint Ann's in Bklyn would both be considering an Aug kid for K.

    • it depends on the school. you should apply and let the schools tell you. I think it is unlikely but if your child is mature you may be ok. and some of the hill schools (HM, Riverdale, Ethical want you to apply on-time, and they may not look at your DC at 6 for K. they will tell you if DC should be held back.

      • When do they tell you? When letters go out in February, or earlier in the process?

      • Funny Ethical wants you to apply on time, but they still told us our Aug ds was too young.

          • Did you apply the year before? I wonder if it is worth trying again or not.

            • Year before we were too young for them as well. Go figure. I think we are royally screwed with this b-days. Got into tt the second time around, but feel very upset that my very academically advanced dc will be starting K.

              • np Like it or not, private lower school is generally about socializing for academically advanced kids. Our dc was finally pulled out of class for math because dc had mastered the material a few years before.

              • Did you try HM and had the same thing happen there? We did not apply there this year, I wonder if they will think dc is too old as well. Argh. On the bright side our kids do get two shots at this, unlike the May kids.

    • I know a young late August at tt ss. Don't know about scores, but offered diversity.

    • There are old Junes at my dd's tt ss. The birthday alone won't shut your kid out if she's deemed too young this coming admissions season.
