  • DC born in Feb 2008. We live in Prospect Heights brooklyn. Started looking into schools and totally confused. I would really love to avoid expensive programs but seems there is no public school option until DC is older. We have a nanny now. Should DC be starting something this fall/next fall?? Even the websites out there (greatschools etc) don't seem to have helpful info. Suggestions please!

    • Too early to worry! Union Temple is a lovely, low-key preschool in your neighborhood. Worry about this the fall before your DC turns 3 (Sept 2010). Really no reason to get all worked up about it now.

      • thank you! I have friends sending their DCs to "school" - DCs will be a full 2 in september and it was just not clear to me if I should be doing that or what. and thanks for the suggestion on union temple.

      • I'm sorry to break it to you- but I've heard as of late that Union Temple isn't so easy to gain entry to- a family member of mine was debating joining the temple to get their dcs in as the demand was so high and they prefer members- just preparing OP- it's good that she's looking into this stuff now- don't obsess over it but start asking friends and neighbors where their dcs happily attend preschool.

    • In response to above -- I've known several people get off the wait-list there if they didn't get in straight away, so don't start getting anxious yet. Also, check parkslopeparents.com -- they have recommendations for childcare/schools and reviews of daycares and preschools in the area (including Prospect Heights). You may also want to look at Montessori Day School (I think they're on Underhill), although I don't have any personal experience with them. Also, some schools in Park Slope that are pretty close to Flatbush include Park Slope Childcare Collective and St. John's Kidz (the latter is a daycare but I've heard great things about them). Also, Beth Elohim (on 8th & Garfield) has a great program and isn't that far from Prospect Heights, depending on where you live. GL!
