can someone explain what is going on with 41/3 waitlist? received an email saying they want preference by june 3 and assignments would be sent on june 5. then received another email saying that i did not respond and need to by june 5 (although i actually had and have confirmation of receipt). obviously they are delaying again and seems like they are playing games with 41 pref's by pretending that i did not respond in time. anyone have a clue? thanks.

[ Reply | Options ]somewhat related question: does anyone know if 41 is going to lose any of its "special' things like some of the afterschool programs, some of the dc qualified for G&T but not citywide, so we're not sure if to just go with the 41.
[ Reply | Options ]^^^sorry, meant to say "...some of the "choice" things like art, music, etc? How often do the dc's have gym class there? Not sure if it's worth choosing a non-citywide G&T over 41.
[ Reply | Options ]art and music are not choice subjects, they are part of the curriculum and they will remain. whether there will be special cluster rooms dedicated specifically to those classes is an open question. dcs have gym one a week, which is typical for most doe schools(including g&ts). we didn't feel district schools were worth the trade-off (commute, lack of funds, etc.), but there are certainly arguments to be made for at least lower lab and ps11. fwiw, the doe has asked 41 and 3 to come up with a "wish list" of things they would need to deal with the overcrowding and has said they are working with the schools to try to make at least some of them happen. the after school programs are amazingly broad and varied and range from very inexpensive to less so. i haven't seen a school that offers what 41 does as far as that goes.
[ Reply | Options ]My dd has yoga or movement every day, but only had gym once a week for one semester

np. k dcs have gym once a week for one semester (emphasis on sports) and dance once a week for one semester (emphasis on movement). i'm not sure if this is because the gym teacher is overbooked or because they want to offer something to the dds who aren't into sports or what. it's kind of a bummer because my ds far prefers gym.
[ Reply | Options ]OK, thanks. that's useful info. Can you give me an idea of how much the afterschool programs cost?
[ Reply | Options ]it varies depending on the program you pick. if you go to ps41.org and click on the after school link, it gives links to all the different programs' websites (and there are probably eight or so, each with different classes.) the best deal is through the mcburney y, and it's even cheaper if you're a member. classes there tend to run about $90 for a 7-week session, 3-5. (you can tack on another class that goes until 6 for more money.) again, this is all accessible through the ps41 website.
[ Reply | Options ]Thanks! Wow, that's a great price and it's great that there are so many things to choose from. Do they fill up quickly? And, unrelatedly, is your dc happy at 41? Are there things about the school that you (or dc) don't like?
[ Reply | Options ]we love it. some of the y classes fill up faster than others but the woman who runs it is a softie who will make room if she can. we love 41. the overcrowding is obviously been an issue, but we have been happy with how far our dc has come this year and with the very committed group of parents.
[ Reply | Options ]NP. Do you think the school will manage OK with what will now be much larger classes in the uppoer grades (once this large incoming K cohort moves into the uppoer grades)? What do you think will be compromised with the increased overcrowding? And how large are the current classes in 3rd, 4th, 5th grade? Thanks.
