      • About 10-12 years. We board him when we go on vacation. The House Rabbit Society (rabbit.org) has boarding services; there are also some independent boarding services. Never been a big deal.

    • Lagomorph lover here; know them and love them well. What type of bunny do you live with? How old?Male/female? Litter trained? What are you feeding that bun? Maple twigs are good nibbling things.

      • Neutered/spayed?Is it your first rabbit? Does it do brilliant, acrobatic aerial stunts on any rug or surface with traction? Does it come running to the door when your key is in the lock?Has it developed a taste for expensive leather and silk? Do you have a constant fresh, supply of wheatgrass, timothy hay and kale? Does your rabbit eat spaghetti? God, We need a bunny again. We've had several and they've all been incredible. The most recent one died young, gorgeous and crazy. We still miss her like she'd been with us forever.

        • He is neutered, as all buns should be, if the owner does not intend to breed. He does do those aerial stunts - we call them "frolics." He does come running when we come in, but he has not developed a taste for leather or silk - though DH certainly learned not to keep his jeans on the floor! He mainly eats timothy products and veggies, no spaghetti. I'm with you on rabbits being incredible pets. They are seriously so much fun.

            • np: mine used to do this too, he'd run and greet me at the door and then I would have to stand there while he spend a few minutes running around and around in circles and leap in the air - I later learned this is a mating ritual for bunnies, that he considered me his "mate". I'd also take him out running around our apartment building, it was the cutest thing, he would run right alongside me, it was so sweet

      • He is a Holland lop, so sweet. Male, definitely litter trained - we didn't even need to train! He took to his litter box immediately. Very clean animals, rabbits are. We feed him timothy hay, timothy hay pellets, veggies (usually parsley or cilantro). Sometimes he gets hay cubes - timothy hay pressed into hard cubes. Helps with the gnawing instinct.

        • One of my buns uses Tidy Cat litter, but the other doesn't like that, so she uses Yesterday's news--a compressed paper litter. I didn't litter train either--they just used the box like a kitty.

        • Mine love fresh clover and grass (no pesticides) from our yard. They also love cat tails (very fibrous), apples, cabbage, leaf lettuce (never feed iceburg), etc. We also feed Papaya Enzyme tablets to prevent hairballs. They get very excited and hop over and take right out of your fingers.

          • OP - OMG, mine loves apples too, though bananas are his absolute favorite. I love it when he eats banana from my hand. He digs strawberries too. We haven't used the papaya enzyme tablets, as his digestive system has always been very healthy, but I've heard good things about them.

              • Bananas are nice to hand-feed to them because they're soft and so a little will stick to your fingers, causing bun to lick you. It's so cute.

              • Even though we don't have a bunny this year, we still call the bunanas. I posted about our beautiful bunny that seized. We haven't adopted another since, yet have fostered consistently. This post has sparked the conversation in our home. It's always been 'when' not 'if', since we've had rabbits for over 20 yrs. Rabbits are wonderful, but do require serious work(esp in the early life), thorough research and commitment. Please don't buy a rabbit at a petstore. We've been rescuing domesticated rabbits from Central(and other nyc parks) for years. In the month after Easter, many are simply 'freed' by people that couldn't deal. There are tons of rabbits needing good homes.

                • I'm the one who has 2 bunnies (posted below). Both I took to foster because the humane society was so full--and I ended up keeping them. It makes me sad that people keep purchasing rabbits and then dump them outside--they will die outside, people! Rabbits are a very misunderstood pet.

      • That's great! All the oldest rabbits I've known were N Dwarves. The least hardy are rabbits bred for human consumption. They don't make it far beyond their most 'delectable' ages, as they're bred with the assumption that they don't need to live past 1 yo. Our 'meat rabbit' rescue didn't make it past 1&1/2. Had a sudden seizure and failed on the spot. It's so sad. Where'd you get your Simon?

        • Weird story. My friend's fiancee was the nanny of a woman with two kids. The woman bought them a bunny at Petco or Petland. Then she got pg with #3 and decided the bunny was SO much work--so she stuck him in a cage in a room in the basement and basically ignored him. Nanny took him off her hands, so my friend ended up with him. I had another bunny at the time (another N dwarf, but she ended up with a bolus in her stomach and died 6 1/2 years ago at 3 1/2) and bunnysat Simon when friend went on vacation. Sophie and Simon fell in love, and it was decided I'd keep Simon. This was in Canada. Simon moved with us to the US, the UK and back to the US; he's very well-travelled for a $20 pet store bunny!

    • I have 2 absolutely wonderful buns--a neutered male and a spayed female--I got them from the Humane Society (volunteer there). Please don't breed bunnies--buns are the 3rd most dumped pet at shelters. Yes, they need to be spayed/neutered just like dogs/cats. Buns are great, but not for everyone...they are very misunderstood pets. Please research and read everything before considering one. It is very important to pick them up correctly because they are very fragile. So great to see other bunny lovers!

      • OP - I have tried putting a harness on my rabbit, but he just won't stand for it. He spends all his time trying to get it off, which makes me a little sad, cause I'd just love to take him to the park so he can run and explore.

    • As with all pets, please do not get a bunny for a child unless you want the pet and will take care of it yourself. Children easily tire of taking care of animals and then they are the victims and get dumped. There are tons of homeless animals because of this. Also, please consider your rescue groups and humane societies and don't purchase from pet stores. www.petfinder.org is a good org.
