CONTACT: Chris Franklin (415) 912-8300 chris@wondersitter.com Kate Horan khoranusa@yahoo.com MEDIA ALERT FREE FAMILY EVENT TO SPOTLIGHT ATTENTION ON CITY’S THREATENED URBAN PARKS Coalition of concerned parents, business and civic leaders lead movement WHAT: SAVE OUR PARKS (SOP) Family Picnic Festival – A free, family-oriented event celebrating San Francisco’s public parks and featuring live music; children’s activities including a petting zoo, pony rides, Karate for kids; an art zone; family field games; wandering entertainers; food and refreshments; and more. WHY: California’s current budget crisis is compounding already drastically reduced funding to maintain the quality and safety of San Francisco’s urban parks. The planned cutback’s impact on parks will be substantial: a reduction of park services, child development activities and child athletic programs, refuse removal issues, increase in graffiti, pests and illegal activities. The SAVE OUR PARKS Family Picnic Festival – in addition to providing a day of family fun in one of our city’s urban parks -- will mobilize support for San Francisco’s urban parks and launch a grassroots movement. The resulting group of supporters will be active in raising awareness of the issues facing the parks and be instrumental in identifying alternatives to cutbacks. The end goal: to save our parks. WHEN: Sunday, June 21st, 2009 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. WHERE: Moscone Recreation Center (Marina/Cow Hollow) 1800 Chestnut St. San Francisco CA 94123 Street Parking Available WHO CARES? YOU!: San Francisco property values are one of the highest in the country and most available space has been developed. Public open spaces and urban parks become necessary respites to an otherwise concrete jungle. Residents and visitors alike, sports enthusiasts and more use these open spaces. Families in particular rely on parks to provide children open space for recreation. Our parks also serve as an important habitat for many species of animals and house several of San Francisco’s cultural institutions. We must save our parks. Find us at: www.saveourparkssf.org
