  • How to let a nanny go early? We initially hired our nanny to work through August, but we want to let her go now for a few reasons. The main issue is that she is taking too much unscheduled time off (has been out 11 work days in the past 5 weeks, with pay), but for seemingly good reasons (family emergency, illness). We really like her, but paying her salary and a temp is getting to be too much. Not to mention the vacation days we've had to use to cover part of these times. ^^Forgot to add that my employer is getting annoyed with me calling in suddenly so often lately and I feel my position may be jeopardized if this continues. Thanks for any advice!

    • Just as you stated. Tell her and be done.

      • DH doesn't think it's right to let her go earlier than we initially told her, but agrees we cannot continue with these sudden days off. Is it unethical to let her go? I don't want to be a bad employer, but I really don't see how we can manage even one more day off over the next three months...

    • If her absences are affecting your job performance and relations with your boss, you have to let her go. ASAP.

    • Have you put it to her that you like her but her time off is a problem? She may surprise you, I would talk to her and see if she can sort it out before giving her her marching orders.

      • I did mention it last time and she said that we don't have to pay her for time off then. Not really a solution since her not showing up is part of the problem...

    • How many vacation days does she get? Just stop paying her for unscheduled time off and she'll be there. I had the same problem.

      • She has had over three weeks off so far this year, which boils down to a day off for every four days worked. We told her after the last incident that she was out of vacation and sick days, but she called in today and really does sound sick. We don't want her to come to work sick for obvious reasons, so we don't want her hiding illnesses from us, but we really can't keep doing this!
