I want to sign up for a mommy and me swimming class for dd who is almost 2. On the form it says 'child will be dunked underwater.' At this age she has no fear of the water but I don't think I could physically dunk her underwater without her freaking out and then becoming scared of the water and not wanting to go in anymore. Will it scare her if I make us dunk her under water? No flames here....first time parent...

    • i take dcs to swimming since they are 12mo. we do it at the JCC. The teach the children to do bubbles, by blowing the water. And from there, you put them underwater. It was quite easy for most children with this method.

        • first it is just a second or tow. then you start doing other exercises, like passing the child to the instructor and vice versa (4 feet only), they jump into the water and you catch them, etc. The only thing I tell you is not to force your child if the dc is scared. I have a friend that got a private instructure to dc. The idiot instructor dunked dc so much that my friend could barely wash dc hair for a long time. If done correctly they enjoy going under water. Trust your guts.

    • you get the kid used to the water at first, then gradually put them under water for a split second at a time. usually just putting their chin under, then mouth under, then nose under, etc.

    • yes i think it would scare your dd; definitely would have scared mine. most classes start out with "blowing bubbles" to acclimate to part of face being in water.

    • In our class it was a split second dunk, and then immediate laughing/playing to distract from being under.
