i don't see anything on their website that says anything about the profoundly gifted but i'm glad you find it funny.
[ Reply | Options ]actually they use the code words, "the precocious child" which actually means gifted
[ Reply | Options ]i always thought "precocious" meant "irritating and in your face and a little spoiled" a la eloise

Speyer does have spots available. Their current combined 1st/2nd class is going to turn into a 2nd/3rd class, and they will have some spots. They said so at last week's OH (we were there). FYI: They said there is no heavy leaning on specific ERB scores (is that the same as IQ cutoff?) as they believe there are more elements to what makes a child interested in learning than just a specific number from one test. They referred to it as viewing a "movie" of the whole child rather than just a snapshot of that static point in time which was the test. Seemed to make sense. Most people there seemed down to earth, and HOS was quite riveting. Never heard anybody say anything about profoundly gifted.

Our dc will be attending the Academy of St. Joseph in the Fall (it's in Greenwich Village). I know they have spots for 2nd grade. The school has only been around a few years and the tuition is a little under 20K.

St. Joseph will be pre-K to 8th grade, but this year they'll be pre-K to 2nd grade (they're adding one grade per year). We're not even slightly Catholic but we love the school and there are lots of non-Catholic families there (they use a humanities-based approach, not a religious approach). We actually very excited about our dc going there, especially since it's in our neighborhood (we had a spot at PS 41 but gave it up when we found out how large the classes will be there this coming year).

NP. how many dc's are in K classes at 41? Are there assistant teachers in the classes or is there just one teacher? We're near the top of the waitlist and are expecting to get a spot there but have already paid a deposit at private.

I would definitely not look at St.J's and we are Reform. It's probably a good school but it is ArchDiocese owned
[ Reply | Options ]NP. What does that mean "ArchDiocese owned"? Is that a reason to not look at the school? We haven't looked at it but are planning to start at a parochial school for K in the Fall and we might consider St. Joseph next year if we don't like the parochial school. Don't know much about the school though, but it's convenient for us because we live in SoHo.

We went to an open house and asked about this, and we learned that the Academy of Saint Joseph is actually not "ArchDiocese owned" - nor is it a "Parish school" - rather, its operating under an Archidiocese loan, which they expect to pay back in the not-too-distant future so that they can operate completely independently. And the head of the school mentioned (when we asked at the open house about religious diversity at the school) that non-Catholic families were welcome, and further mentioned as an example that the Catholic school she previously ran in Florida was so highly-regarded that it attracted many Jewish families. That being said, it is completely understandable that families of different faiths may feel a Catholic school is not a good fit for them.

I would look at some k-5 or k-6 schools like Metropolitan Montessori. When these schools have attrition its probably hard for them to fill the spot because they only have a few more years.

I think you will end up with your pick of spots. Seriously. Just heard today of a 1st grader not going back to Fieldston Lower (although I'm told they haven't notified the school yet) and I would bet that this will happen a lot before the next payment is due (which is July 1st at a lot of school).
[ Reply | Options ]I really doubt that - two dc's left my dc's school this year because their families moved - they are not being replaced. They often don't. All schools have natural attrition. I do think that she should call around & work with the parents' league as she might find a desirable spot, but don't make it out to be what it is not. GL OP.

Try Catholic schools for second grade; many of them still have spots. If you like the school after you get in, stay there - - they are all academically excellent. If not, then fish around for a non-Catholic private while your dc is at the Catholic school. I just saw a flyer for Blessed Sacrament on the UWS - - you could start there. There are good ones down in the Village, too, like Our Lady of Pompeii. Avoid NYC public schools at all costs! Especially PS41, which is terribly overcrowded.
