Has anyone ever hired an "educational consultant" like Abacus? Does this really help to improve dc's chances of admission?

Consultants can help you navigate the process if you do not have a good psd, however they cannot make you or your dc a good "fit" for a school if you are not to begin with. It can be a huge waste of money.

itd. we used a consultant and were initially waitlisted everywhere. consultant had a relationship with doa at one of the schools and we got in with her intervention. psd was totally useless and without our consultant, we would have been shutout. look at it as an insurance policy if nothing else.

I don't see why it would. Your kid is either a good candidate or he/she's not. A consultant doesn't change anything.
[ Reply | Options ]totally disagree. we hired a consultant and got our end of the process off to a great start, made sure ds was in a good position to shine. Ds was applying out from one ongoing and the school we were leaving did some things that could have made it impossible to switch. I think if we had not gotten so much of it right, the outcome would not have been what we wanted. Dc admitted to top choice school despite apparent sabotage of school we wanted to leave. You NEVER know what can go wrong. Best to put one's best foot forward, and the consultant certainly helps tremendously with this.
