    • Each Montessori is so different, but, yes, the one my friend's ds goes to (NJ) is very cold. The teacher NEVER greets the kids, the parents aren't allowed to be involved or ever set foot in the classroom. Snack is not a communal event (just eat when you want), etc. I don't think all Montessori schools are like that, but that really isn't a school I'm interested in.

    • AMI-affiliated schools are more strict Montessori (Metropolitan, REDS), AMS affiliated schools are more modified (WSMS, Morningside).

        • np - Both are on the UWS. WSMS is in the W 90s between WEA and Riverside Dr; Morningside is on 100th and WEA

          • DC is at WSMS. What you post above is nothing like the school. Teachers make a big deal about greeting (and shaking hands) each morning, parents stay and do work until drop-off time is over, parents are welcome to come back to class to do a presentation on their careers or hobbies...it's a warm, wonderful place, IMO.

      • I think Metropolitan is now AMS as well. Very warm and sweet school with excellent academics in the older grades.

    • the vibe depends on the teachers. My ds went to Montessori preschool and we loved it

    • the fact that parents aren't allowed to be involved or set foot in class would make me cross them off my list immediately, on principle.

      • you wouldn't even ask about the reason? like if the reason is that parents are allowed in at certain times to observe, but that a constant parade of parents in and out of a classroom is very disruptive, especially to young people who are trying to develop concentration and doing their work.

        • i assumed by her post that they just weren't allowed in. i would never expect to "parade in" at any time, but if i want to schedule a visit to my child's school or class i should be able to do so, period.

    • No, not all Montessoris are like that. Ds's Montessori is very warm. Teachers greet children and seem genuinely happy to see them and parent participation is very much expected (or you're fined.) Anyway, we love our Montessori school. Not in the city though.

    • it really depends on the montessori. which one did you tour? Manhattan Montessori in Tribeca, for example, is very cold compared to Washington Market School (also Montessori). It really depends on the school, and the teachers. I've sent 2 kids to 4 different montessori programs (about to send a third kid to a 5th program -- we move a lot) and while many things about each program were the same, just as many things were unique to the school.

    • Our Montessori (Brooklyn) is very warm and not at all like the cold ones describe here. The kids eat snack together, parents are welcome in classroom at drop off and for special occasions, teachers very involved. Don't judge all by one.

    • I don't like Montessori either. I don't think I really know enough about the theory behind it though.

    • All Montessoris are different - it's not a copyrighted name or methodology. Just as all traditional schools vary in approach, warmth, academics, etc. Like all schools, as well, the key is the teachers and the admin and their philosophy about kids. I remember we toured one Montessori that was really strict in its implementation of the method and I was totally turned off - the kids seemed fine but I felt it was too quiet and restrained. And I had previously been really excited about Montessori. Then we found one that felt perfect for us - warm, inclusive, social, academic, creative - and my kids actually are sad on weekends to not be able to go to school!
